Round table with wooden stamp letters. Tables of this kind were used to sort the thousands of characters required for printing with movable type and played a crucial role in the efficiency and organization of the printing process. The round shape of the table allowed for easy rotation, enabling printers to quickly access different sections without moving around the workspace. The surface of the table was divided into multiple compartments or small boxes, each holding a specific set of characters. This segmentation helped in organizing the characters systematically.

Today in Labor History December 12, 1945: The U.S. Army Military Government (USAMG), which occupied and controlled the southern half of the Korean peninsula from 9/8/45-8/15/48, outlawed the People’s Republic of Korea, which was occupied by the USSR. The USAMG banned strikes and opposition movements and starved civilians, leading to a deadly cholera outbreak and exacerbating popular discontent. Less than a year later, the Communist Party organized a General Strike. Deadly repression against the strikers further worsened discontent, leading to the Daegu and Jeju uprisings, in which thousands of workers were slaughtered by Korean forces, directed by U.S. advisors. In Jeju, up to 30,000 people, 10% of the entire population, were executed.

GENERAL STRIKE ANNOUNCED

Trade union confederation announces general strike

The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) has announced a general strike in response to Yoon’s declaration of martial law and called for the president to resign, according to Korean media.

“We will go on an indefinite general strike until the Yoon administration steps down,” the union said in a statement.

The union drew a connection to the martial law order and previous efforts by military forces to undermine democracy, which often included attacks on organised labour.

“Martial law was the means chosen by Park Chung-hee, Chun Doo-hwan, and the military dictatorship to destroy democracy and human rights in order to extend their power,” KCTU said

They planned on striking for 3 days, but when negotiations were refused the workers said their strike would be indefinite.
