#LearningJapanese question:

I started reading Japanese books (and I much prefer physical books), and I'm wondering how people deal with finding kanji they don't yet know. Without knowing how they sound, I can't easily look them up - I use the Takoboto dictionary app, and this lets you manually write kanji, but with more complex ones that's very timeconsuming.

Ideally I'd like something that lets me point my phone camera at a kanji (or word containing one or more kanjis), and look it up that way.

I know I can use things like Google Translate with my phone camera, but that translates everything it sees, and I then have to dig around to find the original word/kanji I'm interested in.

Are there any (Android) apps I'm not aware of that would help with this, or any other tips? ありがとうございます！

Japanese question: in an episode of Boyfriend, someone is described as a リッチネイチャー. I can't find any references anywhere to what that means (I can get "rich" and "nature"). When I checked the English subtitles it was translated as "quirker", which isn't a word I know in English either 😂. Maybe someone who is quirky?

「門松は冥土の旅の一里塚」

一休宗純の狂歌ということになっているが、よく考えると時代が合わない。一休は15世紀に死んでいる。一里塚がいつからあったかは諸説あるものの、狂歌に登場させて意味を通じさせるためには、それなりに多く建てられていて一般常識になっている必要があり、それは織田・豊臣の時代（16世紀）かそれよりあとである可能性が高い。

「門松や死出の山路の一里塚」という江戸時代の俳句に下の句を付けて、一休作ということにしたものではないか。

というようなことを田中香涯が論じている。

It doesn’t help that the main character’s name is a kanji for Terracotta statues (俑), so I have to constantly second guess myself depending on the context to determine whether a particular 俑 refers to a person or a statue they work on. #日本語

I proudly present to you my meager progress over the weekend 13 pages read. The book’s plot revolves around kanji which makes it very intriguing to me, but nonetheless quite difficult since I don’t know too many kanji yet.

That book is great as a thought experiment and has some meaningful discussions, but is very thin on the actions so far. I’m almost 50 pages in and so far characters were just discussing ways of dealing with an asteroid that is going to hit earth in a few years and obliterate most of Japan.

I think it is time to take a bit of a break and try another book with a very intriguing title!

日本語の「と、たら、なら、れば」を教えるとき、一応は理屈で教えることができているのだが、まだなにか引っかかるところがあった。

で、今朝ふと気づいたんだけど、そもそも「と、たら、なら、れば」には「if」の意味はないんじゃないだろうか？

「と」は「いつもそうなりますが」だし、「たら」は「その後こうなります」だし、「れば」は「ただ一つ足りないのは」だし、「なら」は「この場合について述べれば」なんだから、そこに「if」の意味は実はないのでは？

「if」を担当するのは、「もし」「仮に」「万が一」みたいな副詞のほうなのでは？

こう考えるとすごく説明しやすい気がする

- ChatGTP if the content is long, isn't confidential and I only wanna get the gist of it before diving deep
- Online searches mostly including words like 辞書、意味、違い、由来、語源学 depending on my goal

Don’t get me wrong, though. I’m still far from my personal goal (being conversational in Japanese), and honestly suck a lot at speaking which can be and sometimes is frustrating.

江戸時代後期から明治時代生まれの女性の名前だと、自称が「たか」で、他人からは「おたか」や「おたかさん」と呼ばれ、文書には「孝子」と書かれている、というようなパターンでの揺れが一般的といわれる（というより状況によって活用のある単語みたいな感じ）。同じ人でも「孝」でなく「高」にするなど、漢字の揺れはもっとある。

Watching Asura 阿修羅のごとく, I came across the term 八つ当たり, which is weird if you don't know it. It means "taking your anger out on someone else", or "misdirected anger".

Literally (I think) it just means "hitting something eight times", so I wonder how that came to have this meaning.

管見では踊り字の用例はやはり、直前の字の繰り返しであって、リーダーのような言いさしや余韻の表現ではない。
