San Francisco, Calif., Apr. 1942--Residents, of Japanese ancestry, appearing at the Civil control station for registration in response to the Army's exclusion order No. 20--The evacuees will be housed in War relocation authority centers for the duration

loc.gov/pictures/item/96521724

A black and white photograph depicting a group of individuals, presumably Japanese Americans or those of Japanese ancestry during World War II era. The people are seen lined up in an orderly fashion at what appears to be the Civil Control Station for registration as per Army's exclusion order No. 20.

They appear to wear formal attire such as suits and hats typical of men from that period, with some wearing ties or glasses which is indicative of middle-class individuals during the era. One person stands out in this line holding a child on their shoulders while others seem waiting patiently for their turn at registration. The setting seems urbanized given what appears to be buildings behind them.

The photograph suggests a historical context likely taken within San Francisco, California around April 1942 as mentioned in caption information provided which also references the War Relocation Authority centers established during World War II that housed evacuees of Japanese ancestry throughout their duration. The expressions on these individuals' faces vary from somber to engaged with one another or lost in thought.

This image is part of a collection by photographer Dorothea Lange, known for her work capturing the social issues and human emotions around wartime events during World War II, particularly relating to internment camps across America. Oakland, Calif., Mar. 1942. A large sign reading "I am an American" placed in the window of a store, at 401 - 403 Eighth and Franklin streets, on December 8, the day after Pearl Harbor. The store was closed following orders to persons of Japanese descent to evacuate from certain West Coast areas. The owner, a University of California graduate, will be housed with hundreds of evacuees in War Relocation Authority centers for the duration of the war

loc.gov/pictures/item/20046653

The image is a black and white photograph depicting an old-fashioned store with signage that reads "Grocery" above the entrance, indicating it's likely a grocery shop. The storefront displays various goods such as fruits and vegetables, suggesting its purpose in providing food items to customers.

A prominent feature of this photo is a large sign placed on the window reading "I AM AN AMERICAN," which suggests an expression or statement being made by someone associated with the store, possibly reflecting feelings about identity during that historical period. The context provided indicates this image was taken during World War II in Oakland, California, specifically at 401-403 Eighth and Franklin streets on December 8th.

The vehicle parked outside is an older model car typical of mid-century design with rounded edges and a shiny surface reflecting the environment around it. It adds to the historical context of the image by indicating its time period before modern automotive styles became prevalent.

Overall, this photograph captures a moment in American history during World War II when personal identity was being questioned due to racial tensions as seen through the lens of an individual's assertion of their nationality amidst wartime evacuations and restrictions on people of Japanese descent.

San Francisco, Calif. Apr. 1942. Early comers, part of the first contingent of 664 residents of Japanese ancestry to be evacuated from San Francisco, who will later be housed in War relocation authority centers for the duration of the war

loc.gov/pictures/item/20017059

The image is a black and white photograph depicting three individuals sitting outside on what appears to be an urban street. On the left, there's a man wearing a dark suit with a hat, seated on a folded-up bench or structure with his hands clasped together in front of him as he gazes off into space.

In the center, another individual is reclining against a wooden slat-like surface that seems to be part of an outdoor seating area. This person appears older and wears dark clothing; they are resting their head on one hand while looking down with closed eyes or possibly asleep.

On the right side sits an elderly woman in what looks like a light-colored coat, seated beside some luggage consisting of suitcases stacked atop each other. She is wrapped in a shawl or blanket over her shoulders and holds another piece of clothing folded under her chin as she rests against the wooden slat surface with closed eyes.

The background shows part of an urban street scene including large glass windows reflecting buildings across from them, suggesting they are near commercial establishments like shops or offices. The overall ambiance seems somber, reflective, and evokes a sense of displacement or waiting for something to happen in their lives due to historical events such as World War II internment camps.

The character 町 - pronounced either "chou" or "machi" - is common in Japanese town and neighborhood names. But how do you tell if a given place is a "chou" or a "machi"? The answer is that, like everything else related to languages, it's complicated and messy.

:boosts_appreciated: November reboost since it's been half a year and people still forget that Japanese is my first language (though both Japanese and English are both mother tongues for me :cat_giggle: )

Hi, I'm a professional violinist who plays soundtracks :sylveon_squish:

Ok, over. I'm a musician, not a wordsmith :growlithe_derp:
... ... ...
I'm being gently informed by my responsible half that I'm to write a *proper* intro, as she puts it...

<wall-o'-text>
Hi Fedi/Mastodon, I'm Octavia, a 30ish Japanese and USian violinist (and composer) whose mother introduced her to the violin at age 5 and Super Mario Brothers at age 3. This would go on to have profound consequences, chief amongst which was that the majority of the activities I enjoy involve fingertip dexterity. The secondary effect was that I would go on to use the classical training I received throughout my childhood to, for the most part, play soundtracks while letting my classical repertoire languish :blobhaj_peek:

Nintendo classics like Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Pokemon, and Smash, JRPG classics like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy (IX and X specifically), movie soundtracks including a bunch of Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki Hayao works, Disney, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribbean, and Master & Commander (which is just my excuse to play the Bach Cello Suite no. 1: Prelude :leafeon_giggle: ), and a few anime pieces here and there (along with at least one My Little Pony theme :blobhaj_jam: ) are the bulk of what I play when I perform solo. I do play classical pieces here and there, but they mostly tend to be various movements from the Bach Cello Suites, along with a smattering of Celtic music, though I try to mix everything together in my sets, leaving people guessing as to what's a soundtrack and what's not :blobhaj_peek:

I perform at various conventions in the Pacific Northwest of the US (formerly in Brook and Link cosplays), whether inside or outside, and also perform as part of Troupe Seven Stars at faires in the area over the summer months while filling the rest of my time playing solo or ensemble shows, mostly near Portland. I also stream performances when the mood strikes me.

I tend to spend my free time dissociating in the shower, overcoming whatever ADHD lobs my way, and running out the door like an alternate-universe fusion of Bilbo Baggins and the March Hare from Alice in Wonderland (though, to my astonishment, I've only been late to 2 gigs in my life that I remember). What crumbs of time are spared from those tend to be spent on gaming, reading manga/watching anime, listening to and sharing music (yes, mostly soundtracks), and enjoying what the internet has to offer. The fact that I can just read manga in Japanese really helps because of the mountains of deserving manga that never get translations.

Aside from needing to hop instances, I've found my time on the Fedi to be enjoyable, and I hope to keep meeting interesting, genuine people and sharing time and conversations together :espeon_love:

Time for 😅

Hi everyone, I am Norbert, a Data Architect and photography enthusiast living in Tokyo. I am mostly going to post travel and daily life photography, topics related to my Japanese Language learning, impressions from cafés that I went to (or newly discovered), and some other random musings. よろしくお願いします。

All the photos below were shot on film with a Mamiya 6 medium-format camera.

If you believe that Chinese characters in , , and should all be divided into language-specific codes, then it is logical that the Latin characters in English, French, Italian, and German should all be divided into language-specific codes as well. Caveat: I don't believe so.

I guess I should write a brief introduction. I'm not quite sure exactly how I'm going to use Mastodon yet but I'm interested in and , especially from and East Asia, Japanese and , especially prints, and anything magical or . I am trying to learn , but it's a very slow process. I have a website mostly about Japanese folklore, see link in bio.

Looking forward to connecting with others here.

I have a website with content I've shared over the years & I'm currently playing around with the idea of writing a beginner level book about folklore. I also have a personal account @angela which I use to connect & chat.

This is based on a still of a scene from the movie Tokyo Story, made by Yasujirō Ozu in 1953.

This is one of my favourite scenes in that movie, where the mother, Tomi, bonds with her widowed daughter-in-law, Noriko. The scene is when they're about to go to sleep.

As usual, I used rough paper (Fabriano Artistico, 300 gsm, NOT), about 50 cm x 70 cm. I set up the drawing in ordinary pencil and worked it in Conté pencil (from HB to 3B). I don't sharpen the Conté pencils to a point. I als o used kneaded putty and a piece of soft rag for blending.

Two Japanese women, one elderly (Tomi) and one younger (Noriko), in a rather dark room with a bright square of light coming through a small window. They both wear light-coloured yukata, Tomi's in a conservative pattern of small blossoms, Noriko's in a bold pattern of large dark thistle-like flowers. Noriko s rubbing Tomi's shoulder and smiling faintly.

One of the most typical narratives in / texts in is to be cynical and ironical against the free society: even if you think you lived freely, your life style has been set up for the sake of the capitalism which exploits your freedom by tricking you into believing you were free.

This type of cynicism is seen so broadly that it plagues any narratives which try to be constructive to propose a principle for fixing the actual problems of the society.

I guess instance migration is a good time for an post. Hello lovely people, I'm here both as a scientific researcher and as a human being, and you can expect a range of genres of posts and interactions from me.

On the work side, I'm a computational scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the field of biological X-ray crystallography, specifically at free electron lasers. It's a glorious interdisciplinary mess, and the description I give to non-scientists is that i use my degree in chemistry to write software to do math that models the physics of experiments that we're running to learn about biology.

For fellow structural biologists: I work on crystallography data reduction software for the steps between photons hitting the detector and a merged set of structure factors. I also support XFEL experiments, both on site and remotely, and assist in post-experiment data processing as needed. My PhD focused on using simultaneous XFEL crystallography and XES spectroscopy to probe the water splitting reaction in oxygenic photosynthesis. I did a postdoc in computational methods development for cryoEM, and I'm now back to XFEL crystallography but still in methods development.

For fellow software developers: all of our work is open source and mostly under the cctbx project/repo. It's mostly python with a bunch of C++ under the hood (including some low-level stuff redundant with scipy and numpy because those weren't around yet!), plus a user-facing wxPython GUI. More recently we've done a ton of work with GPU acceleration (using Kokkos, for NVIDIA, Intel and AMD architectures) and scaling up at three different national labs' supercomputing centers in anticipation of next-gen experimental capabilities. I derive too much joy from writing bash-sed-awk monstrosities on the occasions we need them to fix an urgent problem during an experiment, and I guess I'm most proud of the fact that I somewhat understand git.

As far as hobbies, the longest-standing one is probably , followed closely by (s) / and a love of and in various contexts. I have too many different ways of making coffee (they have overrun my coffee cupboard), but my favorite remains the classic latte, and by now I can make a better latte than I can buy. I'm trying to refresh my and learn and simultaneously/comparatively, which of course is terrible for speed of learning, but fascinating. So far I've found the most challenging but also deeply satisfying -- I only have one semester under my belt but hope to take a lot more. I studied and continue to study all the and I possibly can. Right now I seem to be pretty engrossed in , , , and just generally -ing/fixing/repairing things. Other active interests include , , , commuting, and . My journeys in and are on hold but I definitely want to pick them back up when I'm not already overcommitted. I'm casually interested in , , and . I've taken one course in neurophilosophy and can read literature in the rest, with effort.

On a personal note, I'm trans and nonbinary and very open about it -- I transitioned back when I had to explain what that meant. I've retired from some forms of community engagement and support but I'm very happy to answer any questions I can about the US legal and medical landscapes, available resources, policy and terminology best practices, or whatever you know you shouldn't ask [person in your life].

Finally, I spend a lot of time with my cat Rory (pictured), who is perfect and the most affectionate creature I have ever met. I promise to share photos of him from time to time.

Japanese Mastodon achieved to make some hashtags trending about "permanent residence permit cancellation by the Japanese government."

Some of the posts have the cutest antiracist posters I've seen in a while! 😍 :QueerCatHeart_Pride: :acabkitty:

Some assume that other languages lack multi-use vocab like the "F"-word in English. Words so adaptable that you can use them to express exact opposite sentiments without batting an eye.

But that isn’t exactly true. After all, just look at the Japanese language's “yabai”.
