  • To follow a hashtag globally, search for a user with that name at tags.pub, like @example for the hashtag. Follow that account, and it will share all the content it sees with that hashtag to you. If you unfollow the account, it should stop sharing to you. The usernames only have letters and numbers in them, and they only go up to 64 characters.
  • To share your content with tags.pub, search for and follow the @_followback account. It will follow you back (thus the name) and your public posts will be shared by the hashtag accounts on tags.pub. If you unfollow the follow back account, it will unfollow you back, and your content will no longer be shared.
  • You can connect a whole server to tags.pub by using the relay interface. Add https://tags.pub/user/_____relay_____/inbox (Mastodon) or https://tags.pub/user/_____relay_____ (Pleroma) to your server relays. This is a one-way pipe — your server will send public posts to tags.pub, but tags.pub won’t send all its public data back to you. There’s lots of information on the tags.pub home page, and I (Evan) did a talk about tags.pub at FOSDEM 2026. This blog post answers some basics about tags.pub.

  • To follow a hashtag globally, search for a user with that name at tags.pub, like @example for the hashtag. Follow that account, and it will share all the content it sees with that hashtag to you. If you unfollow the account, it should stop sharing to you. The usernames only have letters and numbers in them, and they only go up to 64 characters.
  • To share your content with tags.pub, search for and follow the @_followback account. It will follow you back (thus the name) and your public posts will be shared by the hashtag accounts on tags.pub. If you unfollow the follow back account, it will unfollow you back, and your content will no longer be shared.
  • You can connect a whole server to tags.pub by using the relay interface. Add https://tags.pub/user/_____relay_____/inbox (Mastodon) or https://tags.pub/user/_____relay_____ (Pleroma) to your server relays. This is a one-way pipe — your server will send public posts to tags.pub, but tags.pub won’t send all its public data back to you. Instead, your users should follow hashtag accounts to get specific feeds.
  • We respect your agency. If your server is connected to tags.pub and you don’t want it to boost your content, add to your bio. If you already have , that should be plenty. You’ll still be able to follow tags.pub hashtag accounts. If you don’t want to see or be seen by tags.pub at all, you can block the domain ‘tags.pub’ entirely.
  • Becoming the ‘global’ hashtag server is a goal. We are still ramping up, and there are a lot of people and servers that are not yet connected.
  • tags.pub is developed and operated by Social Web Foundation. We are a US non-profit. The servers are located in Beauharnois, Quebec, Canada in a data centre run by OVHCloud, a French corporation. We try to keep the data storage to the absolute minimum necessary to provide the hashtag sharing service. There is no search index, and we don’t archive your content. The code is Free and Open Source software under the AGPL-v3.

The new UNBRK HEX boards have arrived! An improved version of the UNBRK, this ultra-compact prototyping board for QFP48/64/100/144 MCUs has wider trace geometry for better low-power performance, provisions for header pins, and an improved, unique 0201 prototyping grid to experiment with components reclaimed from . released under the CERN-OHL-S and supported by @nlnet and @NGIZero, you can find its repository at repo.unbina.re/unbinare/UNBRK_

One thing that the discussions I’m seeing on security, encryption, and backdoors is that it reminds me so much of what resilience and safety engineering went through a few decades ago

“Zero incidents” doesn’t work as a mindset in resilience *or* security. So the question for me is what are the arguments we can make and what are the tools we can build that enable this mindset. Rather than saying “no, it doesn’t work like that. go away” can we say “no, it doesn’t work like that, but here’s what *does*”?

Next week is European Open Source Week in Brussels, culminating in FOSDEM 2026 on the weekend. There are several important ways to stay connected to the Fediverse while you’re visiting this week!

  • Mastodon maintains a booth at FOSDEM throughout the weekend. It’s a great place to get Mastodon merch or take a selfie with the Mastodon team.
  • The Social Web Dev Room is a day-long event on Jan 31 in room H.2215 with loads of talks about Fediverse software and Fediverse organizing.
  • There will be a loose mingling of Fediverse people at the À La Mort Subite bar in Brussels on Friday Jan 30 after 8PM. Wear a Fediverse symbol on a nametag or some other creative way so people can find you. Find your own table and then start mingling. There’s no organized activities or special space; just a node in space-time where you’re more likely to run into Fediverse people than normal.

Rolling east through the night 🌙🚆

On the Nightjet to Vienna and we’ve just passed Cologne. Lights low, steady rhythm of the rails, and that brilliant feeling of waking up somewhere completely new tomorrow. First sleeper train and I am very much a fan already.

This is exactly why I love travelling this way.

Arrived right on time, dumped my bag, then headed out for a wander. Stumbled past the Porte de Hal, grabbed Lebanese food, and ate outside soaking up the early evening buzz. Exactly the kind of pause that makes rail travel so good.

Back to the station next. NightJet at 19:06 and my first proper sleeper train awaits. Very excited about this bit.

Through security and passport control at St Pancras and now waiting to board. Super smooth and impressively quick, no queue at all. This is how international travel should feel.

Next stop Brussels on Eurostar, then onwards by night train into Central Europe. The rail adventure continues.

Rolled into Paddington right on time. First leg complete and the rhythm of the journey is setting in. Next up is St Pancras and Eurostar to Brussels, then the real fun begins with night trains and Central Europe ahead.

Consequently, the guidance for last year’s event, which was focused on how to make a great technical presentation, might seem a little outdated. But on reviewing it, I’ve found that it still has good advice for social and organizational talks. Just like software developers, community builders see problems and construct solutions for them. The solutions aren’t just about writing code, though; more often they involve bringing people together, assembling off-the-shelf tools, and making processes and rules for interaction.

Talks about Open Source software to implement ActivityPub and build the social web are still welcome, of course. We’re just expanding a bit to cover the human aspects of the Fediverse as well.

Stop Reinventing in Isolation: Bringing Open Source to Trust & Safety Infrastructure FOSDEM 2026

As protocols and platforms grow, so do the demands of policy enforcement, human review workflows, and cross-platform incident response. Trust and safety tools form this critical layer of Internet infrastructure, yet most solutions remain closed, proprietary, and reinvented in isolation. Further, they’re typically out of reach for smaller and decentralized platforms. [Robust Open Online Safety Tools (ROOST)](https://roost.tools) is building a different future: one where these trust and safety tools are open, transparent, community-governed, and usable by platforms and organizations of all sizes. In this talk, you’ll get a refresher on what “trust and safety” means; hear how ROOST is succeeding with a non-profit and open source approach; learn about the newly-released [Osprey](https://github.com/roostorg/osprey) rules engine and investigation tool—already in production across platforms like [Bluesky](https://bsky.social) and [Discord](https://discord.com); see a demo of Osprey in action; and finally, learn how to adopt and contribute to Osprey and other open source trust and safety tools with ROOST.

The Social Web Foundation is pleased to announce the Social Web Devroom at FOSDEM 2026, and invite participants to submit proposals for talks for the event.

FOSDEM is an exciting free and open source software event in Brussels, Belgium that brings together thousands of enthusiasts from around the world. The event spans the weekend of January 31 to February 1, 2026 and features discussion tracks (“devrooms”) for scores of different technology topics.

The Social Web Devroom will take place in the afternoon of Saturday, January 31.

Format

There will be three available talk formats:

  • 50 minutes – for bigger projects, followed by 10 minutes of questions.
  • 25 minutes – for bigger projects, followed by 5 minutes of questions.
  • 8 minutes – micro-talks on smaller or newer projects, in groups of 3, followed by 6 minutes of combined questions for the group.

The Social Web Devroom is open to talks all about the Social Web AKA the Fediverse, including:

  • Implementations of the ActivityPub protocol or ActivityPub API
  • Clients for ActivityPub-enabled software like Mastodon
  • Supporting services for the Fediverse, like search or onboarding
  • ActivityPub-related libraries, toolkits, and frameworks
  • Tools, bots, platforms, and related topics
  • Advocacy, organization and social activity in deploying Open Source ActivityPub applications

I was a little sad yesterday, that @nlnet did not approve funding for @badgefed, I was really bullish with the things it would enable.

But I am not defeated, I want to continue building on it, and I have just applied to the @fosdem , I may need to sell one or two kidneys to pay for my travel, but it is going to be fine.

I am sorry for those who wanted badges for the @fediforum in October, I will reach out to the staff to see if I can setup a instance for them!

How much am I looking forward to #FOSDEM2026? Well, I just booked my hotel for it... some 4 months in advance 😆​

Last year I was a little insecure about attending as a self-hosting newbie. So much has happened in the meantime! I am still very much clueless about a lot of things (correction: most things) but I feel like I earned my badge... especially after all the efforts to self-host Ghost.
