…It is wonderful to be loved by the Norwegian community. Last year, @sjn brought me 500g of at . This year, a larger group — incl. @Liks0m & @Foxboron & @aslakr — conspired to bring me 3kg of Brunost & 1kg of Geitost!

They now joke (?) that it'll continue to progress: .5kg->2.5kg->12.5kg
I keep reminding them I have to prove to USA CBP it's all for personal consumption. I can totally eat 12.5kg in 1 year, but CBP might not believe me!

Day 2 in Brussels (for this trip). I think I have adjusted enough to the time-zone change that I will be able to be (mostly) awake for FOSDEM 2026 — which takes place this weekend.

Tomorrow (Saturday) is the first day of FOSDEM 2026. I will be attending the Social Web track.

All set for the sleeper back to Brussels, but currently showing a 40-minute delay on the board. Honestly, not too bad for a cross-Europe night train, and it’s all part of the adventure.

Foiled again by my heavy work schedule. I just saw @sjn at this Fringe event thing, & he noted that I had failed to properly place my Brown Cheese order with him. My own fault for letting it fall off my @fosdem prep agenda.

Any Norwegians who haven't left for FOSDEM yet want to deliver me some Brown Cheese? I'll take as much as you can carry of G35 and Geitost. I'll pay you a 5% markup for your trouble.

  • The Social Web Dev Room is a day-long event on Jan 31 in room H.2215 with loads of talks about Fediverse software and Fediverse organizing.
  • There will be a loose mingling of Fediverse people at the À La Mort Subite bar in Brussels on Friday Jan 30 after 8PM. Wear a Fediverse symbol on a nametag or some other creative way so people can find you. Find your own table and then start mingling. There’s no organized activities or special space; just a node in space-time where you’re more likely to run into Fediverse people than normal.

As always, watch the and and hashtags for news and updates.

If you’re not travelling to Brussels, watch for streaming video from room H.2215 . There are also Fediverse events happening throughout the world throughout the year; Fediforum keeps a great list of the most prominent.

Next week is European Open Source Week in Brussels, culminating in FOSDEM 2026 on the weekend. There are several important ways to stay connected to the Fediverse while you’re visiting this week!

  • Mastodon maintains a booth at FOSDEM throughout the weekend. It’s a great place to get Mastodon merch or take a selfie with the Mastodon team.

Question for the

Imagine, if you could do something on the Fediverse after you died, using your letter of wishes/will.

What would you do?

For example, you could leave a nice public status but also send DMs to friends. Maybe post fav pix on Pixelfed a compilation of fav tunes on Peertube/Funkwhale?
Heck even start a grief bot for a short while to help those who are in shock?

Thoughts?

Something I'd really like to see from @fosdem - a graph of which social media addresses speakers have on their profile / presentations over the years. Last year it was still quite disappointing that the number of people with Mastodon on their slides was quite low. Maybe something for the stats session at the end?

Rolling east through the night 🌙🚆

On the Nightjet to Vienna and we’ve just passed Cologne. Lights low, steady rhythm of the rails, and that brilliant feeling of waking up somewhere completely new tomorrow. First sleeper train and I am very much a fan already.

This is exactly why I love travelling this way.

Arrived right on time, dumped my bag, then headed out for a wander. Stumbled past the Porte de Hal, grabbed Lebanese food, and ate outside soaking up the early evening buzz. Exactly the kind of pause that makes rail travel so good.

Back to the station next. NightJet at 19:06 and my first proper sleeper train awaits. Very excited about this bit.

Just boarded and waiting for departure. Doors closed, everything on time, and that quiet pre-departure buzz in the carriage. Next stop Brussels, with night trains and Central Europe to follow.

Through security and passport control at St Pancras and now waiting to board. Super smooth and impressively quick, no queue at all. This is how international travel should feel.

Next stop Brussels on Eurostar, then onwards by night train into Central Europe. The rail adventure continues.

Rolled into Paddington right on time. First leg complete and the rhythm of the journey is setting in. Next up is St Pancras and Eurostar to Brussels, then the real fun begins with night trains and Central Europe ahead.
Still very much . No flying, just watching Britain slide past the window and enjoying the feeling of actually travelling, not teleporting.

Hey, all. One thing that's different this year about the Social Web Devroom at FOSDEM 2026 is that we're going to include talks about the organizational and social aspects of rolling out Open Source Fediverse software for individuals and communities. Last year, we focused pretty heavily on technical talks from the principle developers of FLOSS packages. This year, we want to make sure the other aspects of Fediverse growth and improvement are covered, too. Consequently, the guidance for last […]

Last year, we focused pretty heavily on technical talks from the principle developers of FLOSS packages. This year, we want to make sure the other aspects of Fediverse growth and improvement are covered, too.

Consequently, the guidance for last year’s event, which was focused on how to make a great technical presentation, might seem a little outdated. But on reviewing it, I’ve found that it still has good advice for social and organizational talks. Just like software developers, community builders see problems and construct solutions for them. The solutions aren’t just about writing code, though; more often they involve bringing people together, assembling off-the-shelf tools, and making processes and rules for interaction.

Talks about Open Source software to implement ActivityPub and build the social web are still welcome, of course. We’re just expanding a bit to cover the human aspects of the Fediverse as well.

I’m looking forward to having the interesting discussions about bringing people together to make the Social Web. If you haven’t already, please consider submitting a talk to https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2026/cfp. Select “Social Web” from the “Track” dropdown, and include the length of your talk (8/25/50) in the submission notes. The deadline is December 1, 2025, so get them in as soon as possible!

I just submitted our talk proposal for @roost.tools to FOSDEM! If it’s accepted, you should come to hear about how we’re bringing the open source model to trust and safety, starting with the open source Osprey project that’s already being used in production across multiple large, well-known platforms. 👀

FOSDEM has selected the booths for 2026 (Jan 31-Feb 1, Brussels). And our joint booth of OpenPrinting and OpenPrinter is accepted!

I will, together with Akarshan Kapoor, Léonard Hartmann, Laurent Berthuel, Nicolas Schurando show everything about printing with FOSS, and we will have ...

... a repairable, sustainable printer!

And we welcome everybody who wants to join the OpenPrinting community

I was a little sad yesterday, that @nlnet did not approve funding for @badgefed, I was really bullish with the things it would enable.

But I am not defeated, I want to continue building on it, and I have just applied to the @fosdem , I may need to sell one or two kidneys to pay for my travel, but it is going to be fine.

I am sorry for those who wanted badges for the @fediforum in October, I will reach out to the staff to see if I can setup a instance for them!

How much am I looking forward to #FOSDEM2026? Well, I just booked my hotel for it... some 4 months in advance 😆

Last year I was a little insecure about attending as a self-hosting newbie. So much has happened in the meantime! I am still very much clueless about a lot of things (correction: most things) but I feel like I earned my badge... especially after all the efforts to self-host Ghost.

I can't wait!!!

Well, in this case, I will consider coming to FOSDEM 2026 myself.

I just won't accept the karaoke challenge, otherwise the location would be deserted after it. 😎 🤔 😜
