They now joke (?) that it'll continue to progress: .5kg->2.5kg->12.5kg

A few #fosdem advices for newcomers: wear a mask (it's very crowded, it's cold, you're in the middle of winter, people will be sick and there will be a flu cluster).
Wear warm clothes and preferably layered clothes: entering and leaving buildings all day long, you'll enjoy being able to open a zipper in the overly heated buildings and going out in the cold. Bring a rain coat / an umbrella as it tends to rain quite often.
Arrive in advance, otherwise you might miss your most-wanted talk because the room was full.

The Open Source Policy Summit opened with excellent talks from @HennaVirkkunen , vice-president of the European Commission for Technical Sovereignty, and @dirkschroedter , Minister of Digitalization of Schleswig-Holstein. They're both strong advocates for European #opensource alternatives 🔥

#FOSDEM folks, one tip: I’m not usually one to preach about masking, but air quality in the devrooms is terrible, ventilation nonexistent, and flu season is reaching its peak. Mask😷! I wore a mask the whole time at #FOSDEM 2025, never took it off unless outside & far from people, & still got COVID. I wear bona fide tight fitting N-95s. They aren't perfect.
When everyone masks, it's when it really helps. There is really no good reason to not mask at a big event like @fosdem except when speaking on stage or asking a question or meeting outside.

My current predicament is highly offensive: someone coughing & blowing snot over & over just 3 feet from me with no mask.

As we've posted in our monthly blog posts before we're working hard on hardware CI to automatically run a bunch of tests on various phones for changes in the software we ship.

To accomplish this some of our team members have created PCB's to connect the phones to so we have full control over them, and after some iterations the first batch of the production units have just arrived!

We'll start setting them up in the hackathon we're doing after #FOSDEM and we'll soon share the initial results!

I'm starting the process to make it open source by following best practices like testing with molecule, run sanity checks, tweaking github actions to run tests against multiple matrices, releasing to galaxy. Each year we are excited to see how many NLnet grantees we can spot in the list of @fosdem speakers. This year is a new high with over 100 speakers!
Another record will be broken at our hex sticker table. We'll be bringing over 300.000 stickers featuring more than 300 unique hex designs.

Something I'd really like to see from @fosdem - a graph of which social media addresses speakers have on their profile / presentations over the years. Last year it was still quite disappointing that the number of people with Mastodon on their slides was quite low. Maybe something for the stats session at the end?

Rolling east through the night 🌙🚆

On the Nightjet to Vienna and we’ve just passed Cologne. Lights low, steady rhythm of the rails, and that brilliant feeling of waking up somewhere completely new tomorrow. First sleeper train and I am very much a fan already.

This is exactly why I love travelling this way.

Arrived right on time, dumped my bag, then headed out for a wander. Stumbled past the Porte de Hal, grabbed Lebanese food, and ate outside soaking up the early evening buzz. Exactly the kind of pause that makes rail travel so good.

Back to the station next. NightJet at 19:06 and my first proper sleeper train awaits. Very excited about this bit.

Through security and passport control at St Pancras and now waiting to board. Super smooth and impressively quick, no queue at all. This is how international travel should feel.

Next stop Brussels on Eurostar, then onwards by night train into Central Europe. The rail adventure continues.
