Are you sure that's what it means, dear Machine Translation Engine? Are you really sure?

😂

Screenshot from translation software, showing the English string "Reef-safe" machine translated (with 87% confidence) into Swedish as "rövsäker".

"Rövsäker" means … safe for butts. Which I suppose is technically still correct; this sunscreen probably _is_ safe to put on your butt. But I'm very sure that's not what the manufacturer wants it to say on the bottle.

One of @kagihq ‘s absolutely best products is their translation service.

The quality is amazing, they allow you to pick multiple variations (which is particularly helpful if you actually speak the language you are translating to, to some extent), and they sound really quite natural, especially as they try to mimic the original text’s tone of voice.

Tonight on translations that are almost as unhelpful as the idiom itself, “mark a boat to find a sword”:

There once was a guy on a boat
Who found out that swords do not float.
He pulled out his dagger
With native Chu swagger
And said “I’ll just make me a note.”

An excerpt of Classical Chinese about the guy who marked which boat he lost his sword from as if that’d help find the sword

There once was a guy named Sir Ye who liked dragons. His tools looked like dragons, his tableware looked like dragons, his house and hall were decked by, you guessed it, dragons. Everyone knew this guy was a little too into dragons.

Word got around to a dragon, who came down from heaven to poke their head in through the window, their tail wrapping around the manor. Sir Ye was so scared that he lost all color as his soul fled his body. It turns out he didn’t like dragons — he liked furry fanart of dragons.

In all seriousness, people's ability to connect emotionally with ancient cultures is heavily impeded by stuffy academic translations that follow form over meaning. For example, the translation on wikipedia falls for the classic pitfall of being overly invested in the exact units of measurement given, even though "a thousand li" and "a whole dan" are very much vibes-based, not precise measurements in a mathematical treatise.

All translation is interpretation; if someone wants no interpretation between them and the text, then they have to knuckle down and learn the original language (hey, that's what I'm doing right now). Being afraid to actually speak the idiom of your audience in your translation only strangles it into a lifeless lump lying between languages, lacking the spark that drove someone to write it and others to preserve it.

The Tang dynasty poet Han Yu (768–824) wrote a well-known fable about Bole and qianlima.

Only when an era has a man like Po-le are there thousand-li horses. Thousand-li horses are common, but Po-les, on the other hand, are rare. Thus even though there may be famous horses, they only become abused under the hand of the man to whom they are enslaved, and they die in the stables—never having been recognized as thousand-li horses. Thousand-li horses at times consume a whole dan [approximately 60 kg] of grain in one feeding. If the one who feeds them does so without knowing they are capable of a thousand-li, then even though they may have the ability to go so far, they, having not eaten their fill, are lacking in strength, and their talent and beauty are not apparent. Moreover, if one wanted to rank them with regular horses, they would not make the grade. How then could they be asked to have the ability of going a thousand li? They are whipped inappropriately and fed in such a way that they cannot fulfil their innate talents. Yet when they cry out, they cannot be understood. With whip in hand the man approaches them and says, "There are not any good horses in the empire." Alas! Is it that there are really no good horses or is it perhaps that there is no one who really understands horses?

When the world is graced by people with Horse Autism, then we also have Thousand Mile Horses. Such horses are actually quite common; it’s having enough Horse Autism to recognize them that’s rare. Hence, though a horse may be an S-Rank pull, it is humiliated at the hands of a filthy casual, dying in a stable without ever being recognized as a horse that can run a thousand miles. Such a horse needs to eat a metric fuckton of grain, but the guy feeding horses couldn’t recognize what he has on his hands without a metric fuckton of help. Hence this horse, though it has such enormous potential, never eats its fill, never unlocks its true power, it never gets a chance to shine and it gets assigned scrub tier on the Horse Leaderboards; who’d look for top talent in the bronze league? You whip it wantonly, you don’t feed it enough to reach its potential, it cries out to you and you just crack the whip again, grumbling “there ain’t a damn decent horse on this earth;” is it really the horse, or is it your neurotypical ass?

Hence this horse, though it has such enormous potential, never eats its fill, never unlocks its true power, it never gets a chance to shine and it gets assigned scrub tier on the Horse Leaderboards; who’d look for top talent in the bronze league? You whip it wantonly, you don’t feed it enough to reach its potential, it cries out to you and you just crack the whip again, grumbling “there ain’t a damn decent horse on this earth;” is it really the horse, or is it your neurotypical ass?

a little light Classical Chinese translation before bed because that’s what I’m like:

Zengzi’s wife was going to the market when their son ran after her, crying. She said “Go home! When I get back, we’ll slaughter a pig.” When she came home, Zengzi went out to catch a pig. His wife stopped him, saying, “I was just joking with the boy!”

Zengzi told her “you can’t joke with children like that. They have no wisdom, only the guidance of their parents. If you deceive him now, what he will learn is deception. If a mother deceives her child, the child no longer trusts their mother, and nothing more can be taught.” Then they had bacon.

another thing I don't like

There's no denying that machine is a useful tool.

But *implicit* machine translation?

I consider that a form of epistemic vandalism.

And I certainly don't want it shoved on people as a default.

do The Youths these days still know about Pokemon Crystal Vietnamese? So called because it was discovered in a market in Vietnam, it's a romhack translation from Japanese to English (presumably before the real English version released), except it seems to have been made entirely on the basis of a Japanese-to-Chinese dictionary and then a Chinese-to-English dictionary. For example, what's semantically quite close to "insert"...?

Why are there still so many posts from both individual posters and entire instances where translation is neither offered nor allowed (http 403 or 503)

Certainly if wants to compete as on a translations into the reader's stated Interface Language should be mandatory, unless explicitly prohibited on an individual poster-by-poster basis

What gives?

As it is now, I and posters who will not let me translate their posts into a language I can read

Why do I want to give up my very finite screen space to posts I'll never be able to read?

I don't, and I won't

I'm on an instance currently running v4.3.7

<!--
For English translators:
- The title should be: Two Approaches to Solving the “Quiet Fediverse” Problem: Conversation Backfilling Mechanisms
- It should be noted that @julian@community.nodebb.org's original article is written in English, and this article summarizes, is supplemented with additional analysis, and translates it to Korean.

日本語翻訳者へのお願い:
- 「연합우주」は韓国でのみ使われる表現ですので「フェディバース」と翻訳してください。
- 「@xxx@yyy.com」のようなメンション構文の前後にはスペースを入れてください。
-->

위와 같이 아예 제목을 수동으로 지정할 수도 있고, 특정 번역어를 사용하라고 지시할 수도 있습니다.

LLM 번역이 아주 훌륭하긴 하지만 맥락이 주어지지 않았을 때는 사람 번역가든 LLM이든 여전히 오역을 할 수 있죠. 저자가 직접 맥락을 제공할 수 있다면 오역을 피하는 데에 도움이 될 겁니다.

Reminds me of the localization efforts on Mozilla's Firefox OS several years ago.

"Ibrahima Sarr, a Senegalese coder, led the translation of Firefox into Fulah, which is spoken by 20m people from Senegal to Nigeria. “Crash” became hookii (a cow falling over but not dying); “timeout” became a honaama (your fish has got away). “Aspect ratio” became jeendondiral, a rebuke from elders when a fishing net is wrongly woven."

What are the modern tools available for files? I specially want to know about how to find suggestions from all the previous work done in many other project's po files. I can clone those repos somewhere locally, but is there any way to find suggestion from existing translations?

Mastodon has a great translation tool that lets people read your posts in their favorite languages.

But the feature works only if you set the default language of posts (Preferences > Other > POSTING DEFAULTS > Posting language) and override it when posting in languages other than the default (click the language name button in the post editor).

Typesetting in four languages —  or , or , English & Gaelic — is a challenge. But the proofs for our short story collection translated between Taiwanese and Gaelic are coming into shape. And they're beautiful. Stories by Elissa Hunter-Dorans, Kiú-kiong, Naomi Sím & Lisa MacDonald.

The book is available on pre-order, and will be out in June, after which we're planning events in both the UK and Taiwan.

Just reviewed the W3C draft for the Translator and Language Detector APIs. This is genuinely exciting development for web developers.

The proposal would add native browser support for:

  • Text translation between languages
  • Language detection of arbitrary text
  • Both with streaming capabilities

No more relying on third-party translation services or embedding external APIs for basic language operations. All processing happens locally in the browser.

The API design is clean and straightforward:

// Translation example
const translator = await Translator.create({
  sourceLanguage: "en",
  targetLanguage: "fr"
});

const translatedText = await translator.translate("Hello world");

// Language detection example
const detector = await LanguageDetector.create();
const results = await detector.detect("Hello world");
// Returns array of detected languages with confidence scores

This will be a game-changer for multilingual sites and applications. The browser handles downloading appropriate language models and manages usage quotas.

The spec is still in draft form but shows promising progress toward standardizing these capabilities across browsers. Looking forward to seeing this implemented.

Hello “Mast”ers,
Is there way for users to setup translation for posts to preferred language in Mastodon?. In my case, my preferred language is English and I would like for an option at the bottom or in the ellipsis to translate it on request. This way we would have access to more streams of thoughts and perspectives without the confines of the language. Is it just about tweesecake enabling it?
Translation is accessibility too.

@yvanspijk Speaking of avocados, I saw this German menu in a restaurant in France. It was probably machine-translated because some of the word choices are bizarre (and "Sup" is not a word in German). Translated to English, it reads:

Facultative

  • Sup Pineapple
  • Sup Cucumber
  • Sup Attorney-at-law
  • Sup Sweet Potato
  • Sup Onions Red
  • Sup Chicken Teriyaki
  • Sup Breaded Multigrain Chicken Needles
  • Sup Cream Cheese

I can only guess that the "attorney-at-law" was supposed to be avocado. (The "chicken needles" are probably skewers, but I have no idea why "cream cheese" is in English given that Frischkäse is a perfectly cromulent German word.)

Photo of (badly translated) German menu in a French restaurant, reading:
Fakultativ
Sup Ananas
Sup Gurke
Sup Rechtsanwalt
Sup Süßkartoffel
Sup Zwiebeln Rot
Sup Huhn Teriyaki
Sup Panierte Mehrkorn-Hähnchennadeln
Sup Cream Cheese

I translated (or tried my best anyway) the play "Le Drac" by George Sand, first published in 1861.

Like myself in the books I'm writing, Sand was inspired by the traditional Provençal legend of the drac, but Sand's play presents a somewhat different, more playful version of this being.

It was a fun challenge, if not always easy, and I'm sure I've made plenty of mistakes 😳 stveje.dk/george_sand/drac/

You know those specialised translation sites (DeepL, That Monsterous Advertising Monopoly's translation site, etc.)?

Turns out GPTs translate text amazingly well.

Even with such prompts as:

Translate to colloquial Australian English: "Trotz sechs IPCC-Berichten, 28 COP-Sitzungen, Hunderten von anderen Berichten und Zehntausenden von wissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen hat die Welt nur sehr geringe Fortschritte im Kampf gegen den Klimawandel gemacht, was zum Teil auf den erbitterten Widerstand derjenigen zurückzuführen ist, die vom derzeitigen, auf fossilen Brennstoffen basierenden System finanziell profitieren."

Result:

Here's the translation to colloquial Australian English:

Despite six IPCC reports, 28 COP meetings, hundreds of other reports, and tens of thousands of scientific papers, the world has only made bugger all progress in the fight against climate change. This is partly due to the bloody fierce resistance from those who are raking in the cash from the current fossil fuel-based system.

(Using FastGPT: kagi.com/fastgpt?query=Transla)

I'd also tested against French, Spanish, Italian, Hebrew, and English.

I recently wrote a manual in Korean, and then translated it into English and Japanese. It's quite a long post, but it's relatively easy to accomplish with . Here's how I used it:

• Utilize projects to provide prior knowledge.
• Translate the table of contents first.
• Define a glossary.
• Translate chapter by chapter.

However, this method assumes you speak the target language—it's a way to reduce the labor of , not a way to become fluent in a language you don't know.

De ces jours, je m'intéresse surtout à des enjeux liés à la , y compris la solidarité avec les prisonniers détenus dans ma ville et l'opposition à l'expansion du système carcéral.

Je suis traductrice de métier () alors attendez-vous à des postes sur les langues.

C'est la première fois que j'utilise les médias sociaux et ça reste expérimental. J'utilise Mastodon un peu comme si c'était LiveJournal dans la première moitié des années 2000, donc méfiez-vous. Je poste en anglais et en français.

I am very happy to share that, thanks to Literature Ireland, I will be translating into the novel "Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha" by Irish author Roddy Doyle.

The novel won the Booker Prize in 1993. I don't remember exactly why the book grabbed my attention, but after I finished reading it, I just had to convince my publisher to get the translation rights 😀

Here's a little something by Roddy Doyle himself about how he came to write Paddy:

Cover of Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, featuring various, childish like, drawings depicting things from the book. There's a gorilla with a gun, a Native American holding a bow and arrow, and so on.
