Another performance issue fixed, when an admin deletes an account, it would flush the whole public timeline feed, which is expensive to generate again (30s easily), now it uses a more performant cache invalidation method!

Speaking of garbage collection, the statuses table on pixelfed.social is almost 300GB.

Soft deletes, plaintext + html caption storage (fixed last year) and inefficient indexes are the main culprit.

Garbage Collection is important.

The recent Pixelfed performance fix had to do with notifications and a missing index, but also identified another issue, we never deleted old notifications.

Pixelfed.social had over 161 million notification records, going back to 2023.

So every 6 hours, the task scheduler deletes 100k notifications older than 18 months.

@dansup nice touch putting the clean URL below the QR. That helps users validate the destination. You didn't use a shortener, or paste a long UTM string. Camera preview syncs with the string. I wish more folk would do that, it would reduce QR fraud.

It's wild that @pixelfed has surpassed Misskey to become the second biggest fediverse platform by user count, and likely MAU.

The current Pixelfed webUI is very inefficient, and does not track state, so when you tap on a profile or status, it fetches them again.

On top of that, we have expensive middleware to check if your account has a confirmed email, and if you have 2FA enabled and you verified it.

For every request.

The new webUI caches this data, and only refetches on interactions, significantly reducing load on the server, and I'm working to remove that expensive middleware.

Collections, a feature that I started back in 2019 for Pixelfed that was inspired by Pinterest.

My regret: limiting Pixelfed Collections to your own posts.

You should be able to add a website link or photo/video (that is not a post/status) in addition to your own posts, to Collections, because that's how people use Pinterest.

I'm on it. You will soon be able to share content from other places directly to the Pixelfed app, with recent Collections appearing first.

Does anyone have experience in #pixelfed server migration? I would like to switch from pixelfed.social to gram.social because it doesn’t feel safe to have all my #data stored on a server in the #US. Any recommendation how to make sure my content data doesn’t get lost on its way?

I upgraded to the latest version and something's broken.

The nginx logs are complaining it can't write some log files, which is strange, as the accounts have RW access to that directory, but I'm not sure if that's the main problem.
The website loads, but clicking the login page results in a blank page.
I'm not sure I have enough information to log an issue in github, so wondering if there's anywhere else I can ask?

I didn't have any followers when I started @pixelfed.

I didn't even use Instagram that much.

What inspired me was the chance to build a better home for photographers, hobbyists and professionals alike, because IG kept getting worse.

Never expected my first real open source project to go viral, but I'm glad it did.

Together we proved you don't need a corporation to build a social platform.

My react native ui/design library journey:

NativeBase -> Tamagui -> twrnc

NativeBase was very noticeable, and the app was very sluggish.

Tamagui helped but you could still tell it was a non-native app.

twrnc + hermes brought native performance to Loops without complicated theme overhead, allowing me to reuse tailwind classes across web + apps.

Easy, Fast, Stable

When I started planning the new @pixelfed mobile app, I knew I needed to set these core principles as the foundation.

The result: a much more accessible and performant experience.

I wasn't just thinking about this app either, it has a pretty cool side effect of significantly reducing server load by intelligent client side caching using https://tanstack.com/query.

We also use TanstackQuery in the new webUI.

I know the Pixelfed codebase is messy, but I'm a far better Laravel dev than when I started it, and @phpstan has been keeping Loops rock solid at every level.

This week: preparing the new mobile app, fixing comment threading so you never miss a reply, and laying the foundation for the next-gen APIs that will power the new webUI and mobile app.

Tests are coming to lock in stability too. Pixelfed is getting the Loops treatment 💅 🚀

I will admit, I did get a bit carried away with @pixelfed features over the years.

Collections, DMs, Ephemeral Stories, Filters, Groups and Portfolios were all started with good intentions, but without the continued focus and stability they deserve.

If you use Pixelfed's "Sign in with Mastodon" feature, it does not actually sign you in with Mastodon.

What it does do is create a totally new Pixelfed account every time you use this feature, and copies over info from your Mastodon account. You end up with two separate unconnected accounts, your original one on Mastodon and a new one on Pixelfed.

It might be better to call this feature "Create a new Pixelfed account by copying your profile from Mastodon".

Seeing that the Pixelfed.social server was receiving spam and scam accounts, I decided to switch server. Imagine my surprise when I discovered... I couldn't. You can't migrate a Pixelfed.social profile to another instance. Apparently, this has been the case for over a year, by other complaints I've seen.

The lead developer has said something like they're working on fixing it, but it's been like this for a while...

I asked @pixelfed for an explanation several days ago. They've posted things, but they haven't answered to me.

Meanwhile, they've disabled one of the main features of the Fediverse on the largest (and "official") #Pixelfed server.

In other words, they're holding all their users hostage, which goes against the philosophy of the #Fediverse.

What's more, Pixelfed has a function to export your data. However, exporting posts always fails.

I thought, well, at least I can import the people I follow. Nope, because the only import tool they've designed is one for importing your Instagram account. Disabled on the main Pixelfed.social server, by the way.

I even started to think it was because they were one version behind the server I wanted to move to (which would be strange, since it's the main server).

Well, no, they have the same version. But you can only migrate your account INTO Pixelfed.social, not the other way, OUT of Pixelfed.social. That makes the whole thing crystal clear to me.

In short: NEVER create an account on Pixelfed.social, or you'll be held hostage. I recommend another servers (Luzeed, Fotolibre, for example). And there's also @vernissage for sharing photos.

You can all follow me again at this account: @andrewblasco@luzeed.org. Because of course, without account migration, you lose all your followers 🤷🏽‍♂️

Being able to migrate your posts along with followers to other Pixelfed servers is something we need to do, and will be a priority after I ship the new release, and mobile app later this month.

I say to other Pixelfed servers, because I'm not aware of any other software that would support this, but I do plan to write a FEP so we can support full account migration between software!

Quick update.

Account migration on pixelfed.social is disabled. I hit bugs in the flow and chose to pull it rather than let people run into them.

It’s temporary, and account portability is not something I take lightly.

Meanwhile I’m setting loops aside to give pixelfed the year it deserves: new mobile app, new web ui, improved federation, and a much faster backend.

Thanks for the patience. It’s one person over here, and I’d rather be slow than sloppy.

Viendo que el servidor de Pixelfed.social recibía cuentas de SPAM y de estafas, decidí mudarme de servidor. Cuál ha sido mi sorpresa cuando he visto que... No podía. No se puede migrar un perfil de Pixelfed.social a otra instancia. Al parecer, desde hace más de un año, por otras quejas que he visto.

El desarrollador principal ha dicho algo así como que está arreglándolo, pero así lleva tiempo...

Pedí explicaciones a @pixelfed hace varios días. Han publicado cosas, pero a mí no me han respondido.

Mientras tanto, tienen una de las principales funcionalidades del Fediverso capadas en el servidor más grande (y el "oficial") de #Pixelfed.

Llegué a pensar incluso que era porque estaban una versión por detrás del servidor al que me quería mudar (que ya sería raro, siendo el servidor principal).

Pues no, tienen la misma versión. Pero sólo puedes migrar tu cuenta a Pixelfed.social para entrar. No para salir. A mí me deja clara la intención de todo esto.

Resumiendo: JAMÁS os creéis una cuenta en Pixelfed.social, o seréis rehenes. Os recomiendo otro servidor (Luzeed, Fotolibre, por ejemplo). Y también existe @vernissage para compartir fotos.

Thanks — that is good news, especially for Loops.

Unless I am missing something, though, Pixelfed's OIDC support is not yet operator-friendly: I could not find a documented, supported .env configuration for issuer URL, client ID, client secret, scopes and redirect URI.

So far I have had to modify configuration inside the container, which makes upgrades and reproducible Docker deployments unnecessarily painful.

A first-class .env interface — ideally documented and usable through Docker Compose secrets — would make Pixelfed's OIDC support actually practical for self-hosted instances. Is that planned as well?

Full agree: the Fediverse needs to become easier and more familiar to use.

But that should mean open, self-hostable standards too. I would really like to see #OIDC / #OpenID Connect as a built-in option — like #Mastodon supports, or #PeerTube can gain through plugins — alongside Sign in with Apple, Google, etc.

For Pixelfed, an easy .env-based configuration for a generic OIDC provider would be ideal: issuer URL, client ID, client secret, scopes, redirect URI — done. That would let instance admins use #Keycloak, #Authentik, #Zitadel, their university/work SSO, or any other compatible provider.

Does #Loops have plans for generic OIDC login? And is this planned for #Pixelfed as well?

Making sign-up familiar matters. Making it interoperable and self-hostable matters just as much.

I created Sup because Mastodon and Pixelfed never really focused on Direct Messages/Group Chats, and now my vision of making this a first class feature is taking shape with Loops.

I understand though, both Mastodon and Pixelfed were created in 2016/2018 and it was a very different time.

Darin wird behauptet, der Pixelfed-Account sei wegen „ungewöhnlicher Aktivitäten“ eingeschränkt worden und müsse innerhalb von 24 Stunden über einen angegebenen Link verifiziert werden.

Bitte diesen Link NICHT anklicken und keine Zugangsdaten eingeben! ⚠️

Der Kommentar ist sehr offensichtlich ein Phishing-/Spam-Versuch. Auffällig sind unter anderem der künstlich erzeugte Zeitdruck, die angeblich drohende Accountsperre und vor allem der externe Kurzlink zur „Verifizierung“.

Wir haben den betreffenden Kommentar auf unserer Friendica-Instanz bereits über die Administration gelöscht.

Falls euch ähnliche Kommentare begegnen: nicht reagieren, keinen Link öffnen, melden und – sofern ihr die Möglichkeit dazu habt – entfernen.

Gerade erreichte uns unter einem Beitrag ein Kommentar eines angeblichen „pixelfed bot“.

Darin wird behauptet, der Pixelfed-Account sei wegen „ungewöhnlicher Aktivitäten“ eingeschränkt worden und müsse innerhalb von 24 Stunden über einen angegebenen Link verifiziert werden.

Der Kommentar ist sehr offensichtlich ein Phishing-/Spam-Versuch. Auffällig sind unter anderem der künstlich erzeugte Zeitdruck, die angeblich drohende Accountsperre und vor allem der externe Kurzlink zur „Verifizierung“.

Wir haben den betreffenden Kommentar auf unserer Friendica-Instanz bereits über die Administration gelöscht.

Falls euch ähnliche Kommentare begegnen: nicht reagieren, keinen Link öffnen, melden und – sofern ihr die Möglichkeit dazu habt – entfernen.

I am a little bit sad that the #Fediverse largely cristallised in a way that made Mastodon-like microblogging the default, and everything else an 'extension' at best.

Of course there are other systems and software choices out there, but from what I can see, the only non-microblogging one with real staying power is Pixelfed.

I am a big fan of the 'personal macroblogging' style of social media, i. e. what Facebook and Myspace were back in the day. Specifically, a big focus on structured social data and the way software uses that to provide functionality automatically.

I want expansive profiles with tons of fields like hobbies, birthday and other anniversaries, fun fact and trivia, favourite bands, foods, songs, ideology, location, nicknames, game collections...

And I want the software to be able to use that data for cool functionality! I want birthday reminders for my friends, I wanna get profile recommendations for people with similar hobbies and tastes! I want to be able to create events and notify everyone who is into the same things! I want to be able to have hobby groups to post into and fanpages and all.

Over here on the microblogging side of things, profiles are pretty barebones and there's hardly any data integration. The only fields that software really considers is name, pronouns, hashtags and in some cases specific integrations like ListenBrainz on GoToSocial. That's it. Everything beyond that is just posts.

I get why collecting and sharing vast amounts of personal data kiiinda went out of fashion, but I think consent-based systems rather than data brokers would make me comfortable enough to share these things.

I know Friendica and Diaspora exist, but their development is super slow, they don't federate well, and more importantly, their communities are nonexistant. What use is the best technology in the world if nobody uses it? Noone uses Friendica events and birthdays and whatever. That makes me sad.

Spam mitigation is my top priority, and the nuclear option is allowing admins to restrict registration to the official mobile apps via App Attestation and device ids that use a central service we operate to prevent spam registration across our ecosystem of instances.

SpamHaus and other services are also being considered, SMS verification is too expensive and easy to bypass.

Welp, my other sorta-kinda backup Mastodon account at the toot.community instance is shutting down Oct. 2026. Can take my followers, can’t take my posts. Great.
I ❤️ Federated social media, it really is a decentralized, non-corporate option, but between this and the #Pixelfed app (same maker as the Loops app FYI) dying suddenly (web version seems ok) it feels like my Federated accounts are just college apartments with milkcrate-cinderblock furniture & all my stuff is temporary.

Ever since the last @Pixelix update, it's been having issues with showing my pixelfed.com account...
I don't know if this is a error of Pixelix, as it worked well before the last update... Or if there's is something happening with the settings of Pixelfed.com...
I took a screenshot of the error, but it's a foreign language to me, one I know nothing of, so hopefully this will make more sense to the people involved...

I have been having some issues with Pixelfed.com for a while now, where several of the browsers that I use for daily stuff just won't show me the Pixelfed site, always some errors... So it could be an error on their side/site, but I don't know who to contact about that... 😔

Warum habe ich eigentlich einen Account im Fediverse?

Immer wieder lese ich Beiträge von Menschen, die nach kurzer Zeit enttäuscht sind. Sie hatten sich vom Fediverse etwas anderes erhofft oder vergleichen ihre Erfahrungen mit Facebook, Instagram, X oder anderen kommerziellen Plattformen.

Dabei lohnt es sich, einmal einen Schritt zurückzugehen und sich zwei ganz einfache Fragen zu stellen:

❓ Warum habe ich einen Account?

❓ Welche Erwartungen habe ich an das Fediverse?

Diese beiden Fragen erscheinen zunächst selbstverständlich. Doch die Antworten fallen oft sehr unterschiedlich aus.

Manche möchten einfach ihre Gedanken teilen oder ein digitales Tagebuch führen. Andere suchen Austausch mit Gleichgesinnten. Wieder andere möchten ihre Projekte vorstellen, Wissen weitergeben oder Menschen für ein Thema begeistern. Einige möchten Nachrichten lesen, neue Kontakte knüpfen oder einfach einer Community angehören.

Ebenso unterschiedlich sind die Erwartungen.

Erwarte ich viele Follower? Viele Kommentare? Sofortige Aufmerksamkeit? Eine große Reichweite? Oder wünsche ich mir vor allem einen respektvollen Austausch mit Menschen, die ähnliche Interessen haben?

Das Fediverse funktioniert in vielen Bereichen anders als kommerzielle soziale Netzwerke.

Hier entscheidet kein zentraler Algorithmus darüber, welche Beiträge möglichst viel Aufmerksamkeit erhalten. Es gibt keine Firma, deren Geschäftsmodell darauf basiert, unsere Aufmerksamkeit möglichst lange zu binden. Sichtbarkeit entsteht vor allem dadurch, dass Menschen miteinander in Kontakt treten.

Deshalb lohnt sich vielleicht noch eine dritte Frage:

Was bin ich selbst bereit, in diese Gemeinschaft einzubringen?

Folge ich anderen Menschen? Kommentiere ich interessante Beiträge? Teile ich Wissen oder eigene Erfahrungen? Nehme ich an Gesprächen teil? Unterstütze ich andere oder warte ich hauptsächlich darauf, dass andere auf mich aufmerksam werden?

Das Fediverse lebt nicht von Algorithmen – sondern von seinen Menschen.

Je mehr wir miteinander kommunizieren, desto lebendiger wird diese gemeinsame Welt. Beziehungen entstehen oft langsamer als auf kommerziellen Plattformen, dafür sind sie häufig persönlicher und nachhaltiger.

Vielleicht liegt genau darin die größte Stärke des Fediverse.

Es ist kein Ort, an dem man nur konsumiert.

Es ist ein Ort, den wir alle gemeinsam gestalten.

Mich würde interessieren:

@dansup is in the next Pixelfed release a bugfix about the peertube issue?

It makes no sense, that #Peertube videos are not federated, but #Loops video are, they could even be played in #Pixelfed directly...

Even if one is your project, they should be both treated equal.
And yes, federating the complete video is too much, but the preview image and the link would be a minimum (for me)

#Pixelfed ist langsam und insgesamt schlecht gemacht. Ja, eine gute Idee, dass es im Fediverse eine Alternative zu Insta gibt. Macht die schlechte Software und schlechten Dienst dadurch nicht besser.

Das Fediverse besteht aus vielen verschiedenen Anwendungen wie Friendica, Mastodon, PixelFed, PeerTube oder BookWyrm. Oft entsteht dabei der Eindruck, man müsse überall einen eigenen Account anlegen.

Doch genau das ist einer der größten Irrtümer.

Im Fediverse sind die verschiedenen Dienste miteinander verbunden. In vielen Fällen genügt bereits ein einziger Account, um Menschen auf anderen Plattformen zu folgen, Beiträge zu lesen und miteinander zu kommunizieren. Zusätzliche Accounts sind nur dann sinnvoll, wenn man die besonderen Funktionen einer bestimmten Anwendung gezielt nutzen möchte.

An diesem Abend möchten wir zeigen, wie dieses Zusammenspiel in der Praxis funktioniert.

Unser Gast Friedhelm @catmanfriedhelm betreibt die Katzen-Webseite gandalfgarfield.de und nutzt das Fediverse , um sein umfangreiches Wissen rund um Katzen zu veröffentlichen und mit anderen zu teilen. Dabei verwendet er unter anderem Friendica, Mastodon, PixelFed, PeerTube und BookWyrm – immer dort, wo die jeweilige Anwendung ihre besonderen Stärken ausspielen kann.

Friedhelm wird anhand seines eigenen Projekts zeigen,
🐾 wie sich eine klassische Webseite und das Fediverse sinnvoll ergänzen,

@kboyd Sadly, pixelfed dead again. This time on wifi or not, I can load anything via the app. Looking in the App Store, it seems I am not alone. But it suggests it’s the app, not the service.

Current vs New sidebar nav.

As I redesign Pixelfed, I will share behind the scenes info, and explain my reasoning.

The current sidebar puts too much emphasis on the wrong things, instead of having 3 separate feed buttons, we now have one, and you can switch between feeds there. We also didn't prioritize the bookmark and collections features, which we think will play a much bigger role in the future.

I can't explain how much fun I'm having redesigning the Pixelfed webUI from scratch.

The last time I updated it was in 2020, using bootstrap 4 and vue 2.

Now it's tailwind 4 and vue 3, and I must say, the composition API is wonderful.

I've gone through several designs, and finally sat down and built a proper design system the new webUI uses for consistent and beautiful layouts.

I want to post a screenshot so bad, but I will focus on shipping this ASAP ✨

The last time I updated it was in 2020, using bootstrap 4 and vue 2.

Now it's tailwind 4 and vue 3, and I must say, the composition API is wonderful.

I've gone through several designs, and finally sat down and built a proper design system the new webUI uses for consistent and beautiful layouts.

I want to post a screenshot so bad, but I will focus on shipping this ASAP ✨

Sooo … for #CoopsDay and #CoopFortnight I’ve recorded a bunch of short videos and posted them as reels on Instagram, yapping about cooperatives. It bothers me that I haven’t shared them on the fediverse yet, but what’s the best way to do that? #Loops seemed like the obvious choice, but only allows 3mins and 40MB max per video … even 1min is easily 100MB though, and some videos are 5mins long. Mastodon’s video limit is 99MB. #Pixelfed has a 15MB limit. Do I really need to self-host a Peertube? 😢
