I realized that I need no notebooks, todos, calendars, nor . Thus my surprise at people making elaborate systems, using smart topic-based indexing, or maintaining a digital garden.

Because my workflows are artifact-based, uni-dimensional, and queued. I either produce an artifact (be it blog post, piece of software, or an art piece) right now. Or I don’t. And if I need to do something, then there’s an (often physical) artifact reminding me of that. It’s not a structured , it’s an unread instant message awaiting an action. Or a scrap of paper with LAUNDRY in huge letters lying on my table. Or a call someone will make me in the future.

I peddle in evocative images and scraps, not in bullet lists and weekly charts.

Am I misunderstanding life or am I too privileged to not need a calendar?

One person mourns the death of the Open Internet.

I think a Fediverse, with multiple user-experiences, that is indexable, machine-legible, discoverable, searchable, and archivable by default could help counter this unfortunate trend.

RE: twitter.com/i/status/200645984

From @_its_not_real_@twitter.com:

"""
Absolutely wild how dead the open internet is. Everything is on TikTok, Instagram, Discord, or Facebook groups now. None of those are searchable (if Google even worked). Reddit wikis and discussion are ghost towns. Non-academic research is impossible.

I'm trying to research some niche yet normie stuff to find the best option and previously you'd have a random autist that happened to veer into normal interests or above median people on Reddit making suggestions and it just isn't there now. Its scattered in comments on reels.

Federating knowledge: exploring ways to bridge wikis and notes

Join the workshop at !

NEW DATE: day 4, TODAY at 13:40 @ Free Knowledge Habitat Workshop Area.

Most people and organisations have their very own way of acquiring, organising, archiving, sharing, and collaborating on knowledge repositories. A broad spectrum of opinions and approaches resulted in a diverse and rich ecosystem of knowledge management solutions. Nevertheless, this also implies scattered and disconnected knowledge sources. What would it mean to build bridges among wikis and federate knowledge?

This workshop is going to be heavily centred on a twofold discussion, exploring the challenge of federated knowledge starting from two questions.

  • What does it mean to federate knowledge repositories?
  • Instead of pursuing a silver-bullet solution to embrace all use-cases, what would it mean to foster and enable interoperability for different software?

These questions stem from years of questioning and wondering how to integrate my personal note-taking and collective, participatory knowledge management at work, in organisations, institutions, and informal collectives. Recently, I began actively researching this topic as I started playing with the MediaWiki API to cross-synchronise my local Markdown notes and the XPUB wiki, the public learning wiki of the Experimental Publishing master. I am puzzled by taking advantage of the potential of a specific software (in this case, MediaWiki) while fearing of being locked-in.

Some further, more specific, insights and questions:

  • Local-first approaches and software (e.g. Reflection)
  • Interesting experiments based on existing protocols, such as Ibis
  • What do we take of semi-open and obscure yet very cool initiatives like Anytype
  • The power and the limits of plain-text: how to enable collaboration on simple Markdown files and build on top of it, as Obsidian does

Been thinking about fediverse wiki after @2chanhaeng mentioned it today. Some ideas:

  • Cross-instance page linking: [[Page Title@other-instance.wiki]]
  • Edit pages on other instances with your home account
  • Fork pages across instances: [[Page@instance-a.wiki]][[Page@instance-b.wiki]], sharing edit history up to the fork point
  • Merge forked pages later when needed

The fork/merge model feels natural for federated collaboration. Thoughts?

Dommage, hein.

If you're interested in helping folks learn about Linux and you have some free time, or you're interested in learning about Linux, you should definitely go check out the All Things Linux community.

I really like what I've seen of what they're putting together over there, they've also recently launched an educational wiki that they're asking for folks to come contribute information to.

I love the #forest, I'm grateful to live at the edge of the beautiful #Veluwe nature area.

I love growing food in my #garden using #organic #permaculture and #RegenerativeAgriculture inspired methods, I'm dreaming of tending my own #FoodForest some day.

Unfortunately I'm operating at half power thanks to #LongCovid since Feb. '22, so most of my hobbies are in "maintenance mode".

But this isn't crowdsourced either. Unlike most other wikis, this one isn't open for public edits and can't be. I launched it at the @bkc it to hold the deliverables for some of my grant-funded projects.

Posting this here so I don't forget about it, but also to share: Appropedia is a whole wiki devoted to sustainability projects, many of which can be easily accomplished by an individual or small organization (not to say that climate change responsibility falls on individuals). Found on the Solarpunk subreddit.

Over the past 5 years, I've seem a lot of videogame communities use Fandom as their wiki hosting page. I beg you - please stop using Fandom!!

It's absolutely dreadful to view on mobile/desktop, the ads are out of control, and Fandom will always try to pull your readers away from the current wiki to read some other nonsense.

It's awful. Stick with MediaWiki hosting.

@aliceif@mkultra.x27.one

Is a github project with markdown files and using mkdocs-material on github pages in a github org an acceptable suggestion as a replacement for a reddit subreddit wiki?

This question arises because the r/overclocking wiki no longer works correctly on the current reddit frontend - all links to sub-pages are broken now. They still work when accessing from old.reddit.com but that is of course hazardous because it may be cut off at any time. The wikis on reddit are based on markdown (pretty standard looking flavour with table support).

Yes, contributing would be harder since you're now dealing with github
:tm: but I feel like it would be a much easier to set up alternative than hosting a full on wiki and better than your usual wiki hosters. Also github pages is free and would suffice if I understand it correctly.

Would love to hear comments.
