I really DONT like to click twice when I want to boost a post.
This part of the UI got worse.

Edit: @mrdk gave me the tip how to re-enable the old behaviour :

I'm having high hopes for the latest Mastodon release, and I hope it will be widely installed.

The feature I care the most about, and contrary to what I'd guess many believe, is actually not the quote posting (though it was indeed about time, most other Fediverse services has had this for years).

But the functionality that has me really excited, and which will be a boost for the Fediverse at large, and what will make it more worthwhile for smaller instances to at least try to run their own little community-instance, is...back-filling of posts.

Most Mastodon users, especially on the large instances, had no idea it wasn't working, and the assumption for most new people/users to the Fediverse is that you see everything there is to see. That hasn't been the case.

The lack of it goes against everything one would have thought if coming here from any other service. Basically Mastodon will now load replies to posts from remote servers/instances even if they don't Federate historically.

The lack of that particular piece of functionality made it really annoying, borderline anti-social, to set up your own instance. Users of smaller instances thought they replied and contributed to posts. Meanwhile, the posts/replies from those smaller instances were literally invisible to the people on large instances. This obviously leads to people on small instances feeling "what is the point of replying?" which isn't a great starting point for building a social media community.

But as I say, apparently they have now fixed this, which was about time. The first bugs about this functionality missing are over 9 years old by now. Great to see it fixed.

I have updated my #RaspberryPi based #mp3player a little! It now extracts album art from files, uses #metadata to group tracks instead of directories, and also fixed some bugs. Now I am going to test it over the weekend and see how many bugs I still have to get rid of.

FreeBSD 16.0 snapshot ISO images are now live!

While FreeBSD 15.0 has reached its third alpha stage, the upcoming version of FreeBSD that will succeed 15.0, version 16.0, now has the live images available for download as of yesterday. This provides a way for developers and testers to be able to test the newest FreeBSD version in development, v16.0.

FreeBSD 16.0 is anticipated to bring in many changes to the base system and packages, such as general improvements and bug fixes. This version can now be downloaded under 16.0-CURRENT ISO images, which can be found here:

Be aware that the images provided above are based on a snapshot of the latest development branch, which is not guaranteed to be stable.

As usual, the 16.0-CURRENT version can be installed either using the bootonly variant, which is a network installer, or the disc1 variant, which includes the base FreeBSD system.

However, please note that the ports for this version of FreeBSD, which are located in the FreeBSD-ports and FreeBSD-ports-kmods repos, are not ready yet. Only the base packages are ready so far, but the ports should be done soon to be able to fully test the upcoming system.

There is currently no release schedule for this version of FreeBSD, but, based on the last two releases and their release schedules, we expect that FreeBSD 16.0 goes globally available on November 2027.

I had a crash that took down Firefox, so when I restarted it it was the newest version (an update I'd installed, but hadn't restarted after).

I just went looking through the settings pages, which is a habit I've unfortunately had to get into because #Firefox and #Mozilla keep adding new anti-user fuckery in their continuing quest to drive users away from the only product they make that anyone gives two shits about.

And lo and behold, *this* is the new fuckery I found. Enabled by default. And it reinforces the need to go *check* for this bullshit every version update.

Firefox, if you had asked me how to cut my already diminishing trust in you to do the right thing by your users to near zero, I wouldn't have even dreamed this batshittery up. It's so much worse than I would have suggested. I have *all* the crap turned off - silently adding new crap and silently defaulting it to on is 1995-era Microsoft-screwing-the-users.

You feel you need to add this shit? Fine. But show me a dialog asking me whether I want it on or not when that version first starts. Don't turn it on behind my back and HOPE I DON'T NOTICE.

Vorgestern hatte jemand, ich glaube Du, @galileo , darauf aufmerksam gemacht, dass Mastodon in Version 4.4.0 erschienen ist und man das aktualisieren sollte.

Es war 21:30 Uhr.

Eigentlich wollte ich ins Bett. Aber, ach was solls, installierste mal schnell noch 4.4.0. Oh, mein Ruby und /oder Redis ist jetzt zu alt. Na dann das zu erst.

2:25 Uhr bin ich mit völlig zerschossenem Mastodon ins Bett gefallen.

Und habe mich an meine Regel erinnert: "Mal eben schnell gibt es nicht!"

Am nächsten Morgen habe ich zusammen mit Gemini versucht, das System zum laufen zu bekommen. Wir haben installiert, deinstalliert, wieder installiert, aktiviert und deaktiviert. Wir haben Mastodon komplett sauber neu installiert und wieder deinstalliert. Alles verbunden mit Wartezeiten von durchaus 20 min oder mehr. Irgendwann hat Gemini gemeint: Sorry, ich bin am Ende meines Lateins.

Ich hätte 2 Möglichkeiten:

1. einen "richtigen" Experten mal auf mein System schauen lassen, das Problem liegt offensichtlich ausserhalb von Mastodon
oder
2. Mach Linux platt, installiere es komplett sauber, richte Mastodon neu ein, spiele ein Backup der Userdaten zurück.

Und da waren wir an dem Punkt, den ich immer befürchtet hatte: Ein Backup musste eingespielt werden.

Aber real gesehen war es egal. Die aktuelle Version werde ich nicht mehr hinbekommen. Also habe ich das mittlerweile knapp 3 Jahre alte System gebackupt, es waren am Ende drei Dateien: Datenbank, Medienarchiv, Konfiguration.

Dann habe ich die Platte abgezogen, eine zweite Platte genommen, das System sauber installiert und mit Gemini Schritt für Schritt Mastodon neu eingespielt.

Kritisch war erst ein mal nur der Bereich, die SSL-Verschlüsselung wieder zu aktivieren und dem Webserver zu überzeugen, die richtigen Dateien an der richtigen Stelle auszuspielen.

Und dann war das System, niegelnagelneu, tatsächlich wieder da.

Dann ging es ans Rückspielen. Und was soll ich sagen, es war am Ende tatsächlich relativ simpel. Klar, ohne Gemini hätte ich das nie hinbekommen.

Ich hab Gemini dann drei Listen erzeugen lassen:

1. Den kompletten am Ende funktionierenden Ablauf der Installation
2. Den kompletten am Ende funktionierenden Backup-Prozess.

Und die EISERNE Regel: "MAL SCHNELL GIBT ES NICHT!"

Nach 18 h lief das System wieder (inkl. 4,5 h schlafen).

Ein paar kleinere Dinge, Zeichenlimit, Upload-Limit hab ich dann später noch nachgeführt.

JPEG-XL meets Ubuntu 25.04!

Ubuntu 25.04 now supports JPEG-XL after Ubuntu 24.04 LTS refused to support this image format. It was supposed to land to the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS version, but there were setbacks that led to Ubuntu not adding support for this image format, but, today, this version of Ubuntu supports this image format.

The JPEG-XL image format support has earned an exception from the feature freeze set to stabilize the final release. Your Ubuntu installation now supports JPEG-XL natively to enable high quality images in smaller sizes, because of the much better compression algorithm than other competitors, such as AVIF and WebP.

Before, you had to install the jpeg-xl package manually if you wanted to get support for the same image format in systems older than Ubuntu 25.04. Now, you don’t need to do this automatically.

The Desktop Team Integration Squad update thread has been updated to include a post summarizing how the JPEG-XL support was added after both the MIR and the Release teams had approved this support.

When will you get the One UI 7 update?

Samsung has just started their phased rollout of the One UI 7 update starting from all Galaxy S24, Z Fold/Flip 6, and Z Fold Special Edition devices in Korea. This was right after the Beta programs for this location have already been closed as seen in the following recruitment posts:

People in regions other than Korea were anticipating the One UI 7 update being released to their flagship devices, while the rollout didn’t start in those regions yet. Before the One UI 7 release date, people had speculated that Korea and other regions would be getting the update on April 7th.

In Canada, Telus has published a list of Galaxy flagships devices that will be updated to One UI 7 in approximately April 11th. At the beginning of the page, this carrier warned that those dates were approximate and that they could change.

In the US, the beta program for those three flagships didn’t end yet, and the local One UI Beta Team has notified users that there is “no official schedule has been confirmed by Samsung at this time” for the US or other regions. Additionally, the team has confirmed that “any date being circulated online (including April 10th) is still considered speculative at this time,” but they notified users that the initial rollout is expected to begin locally starting April 10th.

The initial rollout started in Korea, because Samsung in some cases initiate the rollout there as part of the phased rollout, which began in April 7th. This is for Samsung to gather early feedback from users who get to try out the stable version in case there are unexpected bugs that might prevent the rollout from completing globally. As feedback is analyzed, the stable version of One UI 7 will be available in regions other than Korea soon.

If you’re waiting for One UI 7, be patient as Samsung is working hard to ensure that there are no problems during the phased rollout. You’ll be notified about the update schedule in your area via Samsung Members. To check for updates, follow these steps:

1. Open the Settings app
2. Navigate to Software update
3. Tap on Download and Install
4. You should be able to see the update information. Verify the version with your device model posted above.
5. Click on Download, let it download, and click on Install. Make sure that you download the update through Wi-Fi.

This update could take more than 15 minutes to install, depending on the device. Make sure that you have the phone charged fully before initiating the update process to avoid interruptions. Back up your data to your PC, the cloud, or any other device in case the update went wrong. Don’t interrupt the update process, or you’ll experience problems later.

Samsung releases detailed One UI 7 schedule

As if the stable One UI 7 rollout isn’t enough, Samsung has also released the One UI 7 rollout schedule to Samsung Members Korea. A person in the community has managed to take screenshots of the whole schedule for all eligible devices. This time, it’s 100% official. Ths means that you can now use it as a reference as to when your devices will get One UI 7.

The biggest change is to Profile pages on mobile devices. Previously if you visited your own or someone else’s profile on a tablet or phone you would not see their profile photo, display name, handle, etc., because they are in the hidden sidebar panel. If they are using the Bookface “Cover Photo” feature you’d see that, but nothing from their “vcard.”

Version 1.5 reworks all of that. So now when you go to a Profile page you will actually see their photo, display name, and handle. If you open the sidebar it triggers a cute animation that, in hybrid and landscape mobile views, pushes the vcard data over, and it elastically “bounces” off the side. When you close the sidebar is pulls with and then snaps back to its original position. In portrait orientation the vcard info and cover photo drop away when the sidebar is opened (which now opens full screen width) and pops up again when you close the sidebar.

The other change was to how Photo albums appear on phones. Previously the thumbnail images were the same size as on desktop resulting in one long column that’s annoying on a phone screen. Now it resizes the thumbnails so you can see a bunch of them at once and directly select the one you want. I wasn’t sure how big/small to make them so I made them the same size they are on my phone’s photo gallery app.

As noted there are a bunch of other small changes and tweaks. Things like fixing how "category" and "folder" tag-buttons look, fixing the rollover effect on Compose window formatting buttons, removing drop-shadow from tags, making nav tab appearance consistent with the toolbar tabs, even the Calculator add-on got a modern makeover. ich brauche technischen Rat zu #iphone (Modell XR) sowie dem #Betriebssystem #ios 18.
Ich dümpel hier momentan noch mit der letzten Version von iOS17 herum und schiebe das 18er vor mir her, weil ich immer wieder von Problemen mit Screen Freeze, schnellerer Akkuleerung etc. lese.

Sind diese Probs mittlerweile behoben?

Da ich das iPhone zur Zeit selten nutze, im Durchschnitt ca. 30 Zugriffe pro Tag, Akku laden alle 2 - 3 Tage.

Uff. Während das Anpassen der erlaubten Zeichenzahl mittlerweile äußert simpel ist, nein, noch nicht so simpel, dass man das einfach in der Administrationsoberfläche machen kann, ist das Aktualisieren auf Mastodon 4.3.0 bzw. 4.3.1 von einer unter 4.3.0 liegenden Version nicht ganz so trivial. Insbesondere wenn man nebenbei auch Node.js, ruby etc. auf eine höhere Version bringen will.

Auf unserem Server, Illyachan, läuft Debian 11, Bullseye.

Ich halte die Pakete dabei mit den Bordeigenen Mitteln möglichst aktuell.

Trotzdem war Node.js und Ruby schon recht alt.

Die folgenden Schritte habe ich ausgeführt um am Ende bei Mastodon 4.3.1, Ruby 3.3.5p100, Yarn 4.5.1, Node.js 20.18.0 und npm 10.4.0 zu erhalten.
(Ich möchte nicht garantieren, dass die untenstehenden Befehle wirklich so bei jedem das Gleiche ergeben werden. Wenn es so einfach wäre, hätte ich inkl. Deinstallationen, Nachlesen und Fehler beseitigen nicht alles in allem 4 h gebraucht. Immerhin hat hier jemand im System herumgestochert, der eigentlich von nix ne Ahnung hat.)

Das "git stash" war notwendig, weil ich wegen der Zeichenbegrenzung Änderungen am Code vorgenommen hatte.

Die Installation war ein "voller Erfolg": Mastodon quittierte jeden Aufruf mit dem sicherlich jedem bekannten Fehlerbild. Ich hab das einfach ignoriert und mit der Installation von 4.3.1 weitergemacht.

The most recent #update for #Mastodon has reached three fourth of the followers from @heiseonline, patching the #preview-bug for them. So we should see most of the traffic coming from here again. Yet, the number of visits from the #Fediverse to heise.de hasn't really grown that much.

At least, the three #Twitter-alternatives are again bigger than #X, which keeps declining.

In sum, the four networks deliver half as much traffic than #Twitter alone in the beginning of 2022.
