Sometime around the 2020 era, we lost the right to be mediocre at things we love.
No longer can you just bake bread...you must start a sourdough side hustle lol. Wanna stay fit and go jogging or running? Nah, you gotta optimize your biometrics for a marathon. What my point is that every hobby has been enshittified and gentrified into a brand opportunity.
This strange infatuation with optimization culture is killing the human spirit.
So this new year, starting tomorrow, one of my resolutions is to do something bad but fun. Maybe I write a terrible poem. I like to draw and paint, so perhaps I will draw a horse that looks like a table or sing off-key in the showers or in front of my loved ones. The algorithm driving the mainstream social media wants me to be a polished product, but my humanity lives in these messy, unoptimized, cringe-inducing joyful failures.
I will try to reclaim the right to be an amateur. Will you join me?

After a long battle with and surviving #cancer , my wife and I managed to go on a #date to #Toronto for a show.
I took this photo of a set of apartments across from our hotel room, my fascination with the #quiet lives of others all around me. Each window represents a story and their color patterns spoke various tales, some mundane, others exciting.

I thought I'd do an updated #introduction since my first one was a bit sparse on details. Also, #HappyNewYear ๐
I'm an #editor working full-time from home for a small publication. The organisation has gone through a lot of changes over the past six months, which have been stressful, but hopefully things will be more stable this year.
#2024 will also be the year I finish my #PhD. I know I said that last year but I've run out of time so I really have to do it now. It's a #creative PhD -- I'm writing a #steampunk novel set in #WesternAustralia and my #thesis discusses Australian steampunk. Weirdly, despite having spent years on this, I still like the topic and I hope to write some more papers on specific elements when I'm finished. (But first I need to finish).
I have a partner and four #children and live with them plus two #dogs, three #cats and a bunch of #chooks (aka #chickens) in a little regional city on the south coast of Western Australia. I love #cooking, #reading, #writing, #gardening and #hiking and am interested in all things #green ... I've been banging on about the #environment for decades and despite the dire predicament we humans collectively find ourselves in now, I'm heartened by the fact that #climate issues are mainstream news now. I believe in #hope because I think it's a radical act of defiance against the #doom.
I'm fascinated by #science and #space and the #history of how humans have learnt and passed down #knowledge through millennia. I love to learn new things from people whose backgrounds are different from my own. I spent a little time in Germany and did languages in my undergrad degree, so ich spreche #deutsch et parle un peu #franรงais. I'm also learning #Japanese on Duolingo so now I can say 'this cake is tasty', which, I think we can all agree, is a very handy phrase to know.

#Intro #Introduction Well, here I am posting about #BookishThings. I joined a #Mastodon instance back in April of last year, when the threat of Muskification of Bird began looming on the horizon. By January of this year, I began thinking about the overabundance of material-topics I had for potential posting.
Three projects also came to mind. 1) A #TarotCard layout based on #Narrative #PlotLine. I've explored this idea using the #CelticCrossLayout, and will try to take it a bit further.

By a very basic definition, language is a tool: a set of building blocks used by humans as our primary method of communication; whether spoken, written, or signed. It's highly structured, indefinitely flexible, & infinitely creative. Speakers use the building blocks (sounds, words, and grammar, i.e. #structure) in different combos (#flexible) to build meaning and communicate ideas (#creative).

What a cool place!
Perhaps this isn't the greatest #introduction, (I have a bio?) but I hope this post serves as an example of my genuine enthusiasm in joining Mastodon!
A #creative individual, I quite enjoy playing D&D (and #Pathfinder - gods be kind) and have some hobbies surrounding this interest.
