The first London underground railway (now affectionately called the tube); the 1870 newspaper article about it is in the description in the first Web link above.

It was narrow-gauge, 2'6", and would have been more cramped than the third picture suggests.

#1870

Here we see people lining up to experience the first underground railway in London. There seems to have been a single carriage, dvided into first and second class, and pulled by a steel wire connected to an outside steam engine.

A workman sits in a rather small “omnibus” or railway carriage, seemingly outside the door on a bench, his booted feet resting on an extension of the carriage floor that reaches two railway wheels. This was a narrow-gauge train. He is not well lit, but through the glass window in the wooden door behind him we see people inside the carriage itself.

The inside of the carriage, with seated passengers, including a lady in a formal gown, men with top hats, a woman with a muffler to warm her hands, and a boy in school uniform with his bag and his phone. The carriage is lit by a single oil lamp, and seems much wider in this picture than it really was, since the tunnel itself was only six feet eight inches at its widest, and the carriage would have been quite a bit narrower in order to fit safely inside.

The Union Pacific Big Boy, an articulated 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive manufactured by the American Locomotive Company in 1941. Here, the Big Boy was crossing a trestle as it headed west into the Feather River Canyon of California (7/11/2025).

(And for @Ali, it was crossing the Middle Fork of the Feather River.)

A black and white portrait photo of a large stream engine crossing a tall railroad trestle. The back ground is a deep ravine of forest covered slopes. The train is about to complete its crossing of the trestle. It is head toward the bottom right of the frame. It has two small headlights that are tuned on. Steam comes out from the lower right side of the train. Black smoke pours out over the top to the train. A young girl is in the bottom left taking a photo of the train as it exits the trestle.

(Revisiting some old photos. It was great fun chasing this train for four days.)

A color portrait image of a very large steam engine that has just exited a metal bridge structure over a river. Forest is seen in the background. The engine is approaching the viewer, exiting the frame at the lower right. A big brass bell is seen at the top of the tubular black boiler. A small US flag is on the right corner of the engine and a small California flag is on the left. A small pile of railroad ties lies on the gravel railroad bed in the lower left.

A black and white landscape photo of a very large black steam engine in a desert landscape. The engine is heading toward the right side of the frame. It is very long, with two sets of drive wheels. The tender car is behind the engine and a small section of a passenger car can be seen behind the tender. Sagebrush is in the foreground, and dimly, through the haze, a mountain range is seen in the distance. A round, railroad crossing sign is seen just ahead of the engine on the right. It is filled with bullet holes.

The picture shows a train platform through a round window in a wall scrawled with graffiti. The graffiti is abstract, the tags barely decipherable. Through the window you can see a platform with a modern, metal roof. An analog station clock is visible and reads 10:09 and in the background you can see trees next to the platform. On the platform, which stretches into the distance, a single person stands with their back to the viewer. The person appears to be looking along the platform - possibly at an information display. The person is wearing dark clothing and carrying a rucksack. The atmosphere is quiet, lonely and somewhat melancholic, with a contrast between the rough, urban aesthetic of the graffiti and the calm, almost silent scene on the platform. The photo conveys a sense of isolation and waiting for something.

Today's historic photo of the day: Taken by my grandfather, this photo sees a Rigibahn train on the Vitznau to Rigi standard gauge Riggenbach rack at Vitznau, Switzerland in mid 1957.

Built in 1871, this standard gauge rack railway line claims to have been Europe's first mountain railway, and just its second rack railway. The line runs from a station adjacent to a wharf on Lake Lucerne at Vitznau, and climbs 1300m in the 7km run to Rigi.

A bright red liveried electric train stands at the entry to a station yard with multiple tracks fitted with racks fanning out. Behind the train are Swiss chalet style buildings and one ornate clock tower. The background is filled with verdant mountainside.

in British :
"Natural drainage of Bengal was disturbed due to construction of a network of embankments resulting in formation of poorly drained “compartments” in different areas of Bengal. This led to excessive silting, damaged crop production, increased chance of flooding and created stagnant water pockets that were apt for water-borne diseases like cholera and malaria."

This (and some other rotting "monuments") is what remains of the 750mm narrow-gauge Mława – Maków Mazowiecki railway in the northern Mazovia region of Poland

Passenger traffic on the line stopped in mid 1980s, the entire line got abandoned soon after

Nowadays only tiny sections of it are still usable and occasional tourist rides operated by volunteers are carried out

Three narrow gauge tracks next to a road in the countryside. First track contains Romanian-made FAUR L45H (PKP Class Lxd2) diesel locomotive in a terrible condition, ripped open and damaged, windows long smashed, graffiti on. Some similarly miserable wooden carriages can be seen further away in the distance

Inside of the driver's cabin of the Lxd2 locomotive. Paint has near completely flaked off, all metal elements are entirely rusted.

Celebrating 128 years of the Glasgow Subway

The Glasgow Subway is the 3rd oldest underground railway in the world which now has futuristic trains travelling along the tracks. Yesterday was it's 128 anniversary so I thought I'd share some photos.

Finally! The Baltic States' operators coordinate their timetables starting January for the route ! The interchanges remain in Valga and Riga, but should then be sensible. On the largest scale this makes the train (+ferry) route even between and better.

This route gave a good overview of the spanish steppe, with the occasional greener valley.

Since no more depends on , you can run your Hollo server in more cost-efficient way by getting rid of the Meilisearch service!

If you deployed your Hollo server using , here's instructions to remove it:

  1. Sign in to your Railway dashboard.
  2. In the Hollo service → Variables, remove MEILI_URL and MEILI_MASTER_KEY environment variables.
  3. Redeploy the Hollo service (see also the attached screenshot).
  4. Delete the service by pressing the red button in the Meilisearch service → SettingsDelete Service.

That's all!

Hi all! I'm Garry, I'm a engineer based in the UK specialising in the overhead line systems that supply power to trains. I'm so convinced that electric rail is the future that I wrote a book about how it works - you can download it FREE at ocs4rail.com/downloads or buy hard copy at thepwi.org/product/overhead-li. I also post the odd . I'm going to be moving all my threads over here and doing some new ones too

Please welcome the new system.

This obviously is not a train and misses the extreme savings from steel technics. But it's a giant step forward in the thinking about how to handle and speed up city traffic by public mass transport.

The top 1/4 of most intelligent chinese are more than the entire population of the US.

In the end maybe they might save us all ..

Video of a kind of street bus that looks like a city train and moves fast and like makic on streets because there are lines reservated for him and painted in a specific manner. Those lines apparently guide the driving sistem. There is still a driver that has a stearing wheel but he doesn't touch it.
