I just talked to someone at SFU (Simon Fraser University) about trying to find a location for FediCon 2026.

He is a friend-of-a-friend.

We talked about what we would need for FediCon, in terms of a location, etc.

He needs to ask around (internally at SFU).

Hopefully, can get more details this or next week.

@wjmaggos I have to ask - is building something drastically different in parallel while still making compatibility easy a bad thing?

At #Fedicon, ActivityPub and ATProto folks were discussing pros and cons of both solutions and exploring how the other could fill those gaps in tangible ways. We're sharing ideas, improving each other's solutions, and doing them in *very* different ways while still being interoperable.

This kind of competition is good for innovation.

Truth is, I hadn’t planned to. But after getting dogpiled for daring to talk to @jaz at #Fedicon, I realized just how badly the Fediverse needs real trust and safety. So instead of spending money on video games, I’m putting it toward #IFTAS.

Why? Because IFTAS helps server admins quietly block the worst of the worst—harassment, racism, CSAM. The kind of toxic rot most people never see because someone else is doing the hard work in the background.

So on the way back from #FediCon we stopped in Jasper because I told my partner I wanted to take some pics.

I asked him to face the mountains, and then got on one knee, and when he turned around I said:

"This journey together has meant a lot, and I want to spend the rest of my life together with you, on it. Babe, will you marry me"

He said yes! ❤️

I haven't seen him so happy in a while, and he hinted at this before, but I wanted to propose somewhere special

Honestly blown away by @reiver funding #FediCon out of pocket, even covering expensive recording of the event for everyone.

Some may overlook that he spent more than most fediverse servers do yearly.

He prioritized accessibility, pricing tickets at $15 or free (when they should have been $100+ to cover costs).

So grateful for leaders like him and @evan that provide so much for our fediverse ecosystem.

I got a friend of mine to attend FediCon 2025 who founded an important online bookstore in another country (other than Canada).

After being at FediCon he got interested in creating a decentralized way for authors to sell books.

I arrived late at the (pre-FediCon) dinner because I went and picked-up a cake for @deadsuperhero surprise birthday party.

(FediCon was happening in my old neighborhood — I used to live 2 blocks away from Robson Square. I knew where to get a cake from.)

Luckily, @deadsuperhero hadn't arrived yet, and was later than I was (so he didn't see the cake, and the surprise wasn't spoiled).

Oh no.

Ah, the Pacific North Wet, right? No more oceanside city visits without a lot more hair ties or a hat.

Of course, the SWO summer heat + smoke right now are making it downright crispy now that I'm home, that's not awesome either.

Oh no.

I do kinda regret not putting more effort into my #FediCon keynote.

After watching @evan keynote on the first day, I left the conference right after to go back to my hotel and spent 6 hours improving my keynote, and it still wasn't long enough lol

I was so nervous that I didn't even make jokes or engage the crowd, and I will work on that for my next talk.

I loved @julian and @benpate talks because they knocked it out of the park with their humor and talking points.

I'll do better next time 😅

I built a #Jekyll plugin to output ActivityPub information (Webfinger, actor, inbox, outbox, all the objects and activities). It should generate a legit #ActivityPoll actor, which other people can follow remotely.

I agree.

But, AllYourBases (i.e., the name @atomicpoet 's panel) was a (short-lived) video podcast (with me) that we posted on the Fediverse.

I have been trying to get @atomicpoet to revive the AllYourBases podcast.

(Maybe me posting this will encourage that to happen 🙂)

I was talking the A/V tech person who recorded FediCon.

He told me he would run all the videos he recorded of FediCon through Handbrake, to reduce their size, before giving them to me.

I.e., Handbrake the open-source video transcoding tool.

Every speaker at #Fedicon was great and I left with my brain fizzing. @boris ’ romp through the many innovations happening via ATproto was, for me, the most technically dense with new info. Not being a developer, I grasp high-level concepts around protocols, but I’m not someone who can read up on a new one and just absorb these things. There’s a rare sweet spot of reaching enough info density without knocking me over into info overload. This hit it.

We had #Fedicon because @reiver came to #sxsw to speak, and he left with the conviction that a Fediverse event in Vancouver would work. And he reached out to Canadian Fediverse participants to get a great lineup of speakers. He energized some really talented collaborators like @manlycoffee and @Crissy to make the event actually happen.

Seeing people face-to-face is proof that pluralism can work—and it can even be civil.

Did I disagree with people? Absolutely. Sometimes vehemently. But that friction can lead to better understanding. Sometimes even great ideas.

And most of all, it’s a reminder that we’re all humans—not NPCs—and that’s reason enough to be kind.

NodeBB’s embrace of #ActivityPub has given it the capability for members on individual message boards to subscribe to sections of other forums. Architecturally, forum sections work very similarly to how Lemmy communities do.

And holy cow, so busy loving everything about #fedicon I wasn’t actually on line much for a weekend and that’s the largest number ever that Icecubes had on my “unread” count.

Did I disagree with people? Absolutely. Sometimes vehemently. But that friction can lead to better understanding. Sometimes even great ideas.

And most of all, it’s a reminder that we’re all humans—not NPCs—and that’s reason enough to be kind.

I was happy to get some time to hack on a new project at the #Fedicon #Minihackathon today. I built a #Jekyll plugin to output ActivityPub information (Webfinger, actor, inbox, outbox, all the objects and activities). It should generate a legit #ActivityPoll actor, which other people can follow remotely.

It would be good to mention "Fedicon" by default in titles and or descriptions so the videos are retrievable through the search mechanism.

@PhoenixSerenity @chris A lot of Fediverse event organisers are first-timers, as was the case with #Fedicon. That's not an excuse, but maybe an explanation for why there wasn't a policy.

I think it would be a good idea for us to put together a list of good practices for Fediverse events to be diverse and participative: emphasizing speaker diversity, having a code of conduct, encouraging masks, having childcare available. I'm going to check with event organisers to see what the best place is.

And he reached out to Canadian Fediverse participants to get a great lineup of speakers. He energized some really talented collaborators like @manlycoffee and @Crissy to make the event actually happen.
