Today, I am - once again - grateful to @Telev for his generous upload of "Populous" for the IBM-PC. This game is a true classic from 1989!

"How do I look, Earthling?" asks the alien, who's dolled themselves up just for you.

This piece of DOS EGA 640x350 pixel art is a pinup in which a cyan, broad-shouldered alien with a muscular frame, massive pointed ears, and a long tail with a red tuft on the tip sits with their legs spread and one knee bent, propping themselves up with one hand. They have only three fingers on each hand and two toes on each foot. They are wearing form-fitting red spandex: a bodysuit with a turtleneck, long gloves and thigh-high stockings that expose their fingers and toes, and a sleeve covering most of their tail. Each part of their outfit has a white stripe running down the middle or the side, converging into solid color at the end. The alien has grown their red hair long, falling over the front of their head and down their back. They have a smile on their long face, with a button nose, beady eyes with red lashes, and red brows. They sit on purple ground with an abstract blue sunburst behind them.

flashing images warning (furry pixel art timelapse)

The of my dolled-up alien! This started as a low-res phone drawing during lunch breaks and idle times, then went straight to 640x350 because I'm crazy. x3 It also marks my first use of proper dither brushes!

A timelapse of 16-color pixelart of a cyan alien with long red hair in form-fitting red clothing with white stripes sitting in an abstract studio setting. There is a warning for flashing images. Then, it begins with a low-res phone drawing of the figure that is fully colored and shaded. This becomes the base of a much higher-res image with the figure fully drawn and their details refined. Then the background is drawn, with various alternatives tried after the first attempt to translate the original sunburst imagery doesn't work out. The second attempt succeeds with ordered dithering, and the figure is further refined. Near the end of the process, the artist returns to the low-res base to prototype a tail sleeve, then draws it on the high-res version. After further refinement, including the last-minute additions of a visible eyelid and red eyelashes, the image flashes white to indicate completion. The finished piece briefly alternates between versions with and without the tail sleeve.

Featured at Revision 2026 (@revisionparty): "Snake Dance", my entry to the Oldskool Graphics Compo, a piece of IBM 640x350 done in 3 hours and 40 minutes!

In this piece of high-resolution science fiction pixel art, a fighter ship has encountered a huge snake monster, red with a cyan underside and glowing gold eyes, in the depths of outer space. The ship, the nearby planets, the auroras and the stars around them all look like toys next to the gargantuan snake. Parts of the snake have evaporated into particles, and the ship is flying towards its open mouth.

i'm making a game using mode 13h, 320x200 8bpp. i'm using the line doubling feature of the VGA card to make it 320x100 then manually doubling each pixel horizontally for 160x100

i realized i could use a palette with 3 bits red/green and 2 blue, and then do "subpixel" dither to generate the in between colors. i made a converter to test if that would look good, and it does

here's a thread of images showing what that looks like

I think issuing 20+ generated PRs in a timespan of 24h can be considered the open source equivalent of a attack right? Sounds like a reason to ban without explanation?

github.com/silverbulletmd/silv

That would be the sensible thing to do, but I’m not sensible so I’m going to overcook and probably spend hours this weekend writing an article in which I explain the hostility of this use of AI. Because I want to fix the world.

Am I the only person who likes old school F1 games, like F1 World Circuit or this game F1 Grand Prix 2 (screenshots)?

So much nostalgia and so cool still today to play. I'm using Linux with DOSBox of course.
Don't let the graphics scare you, its the gameplay and fun that matters...

I know there are many gamers here and those who simply love and . But are there any serious DOS here as well? If so, in which language/s do you write? (I want to learn , but I am at the very beginning, and it's not advanced enough for what I need.) Does anyone here work on the development of ? Assuming any of the above is true, do any of you know about and ? I am totally and have loved DOS since I was a teenager. I am now forty-one. I am aware of the many updates to the system over the years, but have been unable to take advantage of them due to the fact that no new or updated is being developed for it. Everyone seems to love Linux. I don't. Neither do I like Mac OS. I love Windows XP and 7, but 11 drives me mad. I think we deserve another alternative to all of these, and I also think that DOS can be it if a few things are added to it, including a talking installer, an updated screen reader and good software speech synthesis. For those of you who think DOS only equals dialup modems and floppies, you may wish to read this, or at least skim through it.

Here we go again, #EuroBSDCon! I may have mentioned it, but it's really happening*: I'm giving a talk again, this time titled:

Dirty Tricks: Using #nginx and #Lua to thwart bots and skript kiddies

This talk is specifically for anyone who

  • has tried to host a BBS on the Internet,
  • is struggling with scrapers and bots,
  • lives in the #RetroComputing bubble,
  • wants to see an early '90s PC on stage,
  • needs a telnet captcha, or
  • simply has nothing better to do.

Read more about it here, take a look at the conference schedule, and buy your ticket!

See you there!

#FreeBSD #Security #BSD #RunBSD #DOS #RunDOS #TheDraw #AnsiArt

* I didn't want to post this until I was fairly certain I could even pull this off..

Introduction screen from my talk, presented in ANSI art. The words "nginx" and "LUA" in large ANSI fonts in the top left and bottom right corners, with some of the text from the talk description (linked in the post) in the middle.

Wow, I didn't realise that LibreOffice turns 40 this year with it's latest release.

It started out as closed source Star Writer for CP/M in 1985 with DOS 3.2support in 1986.

Then became Star Office in 1994 for Windows 3.1

It became open source as Open office in 2001 and the LibreOffice fork in 2010.

Paz y amor.

Soy una señora de pueblo clásica, que no rancia, siempre dos pasos por detrás del rumor de que soy un hombre.

Como ya soy una vedette retirada me considero antes que nada una persona en continuo desarrollo. He venido a aprender con ustedes, juntas y revueltas.

That time I took the 23rd anniversary PDF and made it accessible by recreating it as a TXT file (with search based tags for navigation), and also a 5 document that preserved the PDF layout as much as I could manage. ;) (Jim Hall helped out by providing text copy used in the PDF.)

My main focus at present when it comes to cloud is predominately , with Google and AWS of interest also, as well as other cloud infrastructure services such as those provided by CloudFlare, though I’m planning a move away from them due to their moral/ethical choices.

Away from work and tech, I love to the world with my wife and enjoy very amateur to record our adventures.
