FYI, though the Wēibó feature was introduced rather early, later Chinese websites including Dǒuyīn and REDnotes follow the Twitter style, where users would still type #话题 and add spaces. (So Twitter style hashtags are not unfamiliar to their users.) Some Wēibó users even seem not to know the difference and break all their hashtags.
